Budget friendly stand mixer recommendations

Reluctantbettlynch · 16/05/2020 21:39

As the title would suggest, I would appreciate any recommendations or possibly mixers to avoid. I'm not able to stretch to kitachen aid prices but hoped for something basic, reliable and a dishwasher friendly bowl and attachments if possible.

Hopeful bump

The problem with budget is the motors just aren’t strong enough for any serious use.
I’ve got the kenwood k mix. Wouldn’t recommend it at all as it was expensive and broke within 5 years. It’s still useable but the arm lift is knackered. MIL meanwhile has an ancient 70s kenwood that just keeps going so personally I’d keep an eye out for a second hand one as they seem to come up frequently.

Good luck

I have the Kenwood Chefette and can't fault it. It was about £50 when I got it years ago (google tells me now £70) and I like it so much I've since bought it as a gift for my friend and my MIL. Seems to fit the bill OP.

NoRoomInBed · 17/05/2020 03:23

I'd love one too 😊 watching

I love my aldi one , I think it was about £40/50. I'm definitely an amateur baker though so would never spend hundreds on a posher one. My MIL has a kitchen aid one, I don't think her cakes taste £300 better Wink

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 17/05/2020 06:47

I’ve used my k mix for over 4-5 years and I love it.

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 17/05/2020 06:47

For occasional baking (once a fortnight) it is great

Reluctantbettlynch · 17/05/2020 07:51

Thank you for the help. Will do some more investigation today.

lidl occasionally have one in for £40 that has a 3 year warranty and has good reviews - I saw it in Jan/Feb and August for 'baking week'.

flamegame · 17/05/2020 07:56

aldi may stock the same one as the lidl one - it was a lovely mint green, had a good motor. I'm waiting for it to appear again! Can't remember the name...

00100001 · 17/05/2020 07:58

What are you going to use it for?

How often do you think you will use it?

I considered getting one, but then realised, I can make bread, cakes, meringue etc perfectly capably without one...!

:)

vampirethriller · 17/05/2020 07:58

My Wilko one has lasted five years and no sign of wearing out, and I use it a lot.

ExpletiveDelighted · 17/05/2020 08:01

I've got a Kenwood Prospero, had it about 8 years and use it for all sorts of kneading, mixing, whisking plus it has blender and food processor attachments. It's been a very good buy.

Daisydoesnt · 17/05/2020 08:02

OP what do you want to use it for? I ask because as a pp has said the strength of the motor is important and you may not get that with a budget model. I always think that bread making (well, pizza dough actually but it's a bread-like recipe for the dough) is the hardest job for my mixer, but if you weren't planning on doing that much bread it wouldn't be such an issue.

For what it's worth, I think KitchenAid are a bit naff and who wants to buy American? Kenwood all the way!

NotMeNoNo · 17/05/2020 08:09

You should look on Facebook for a s/h Kenwood Chef thats been looked after. Mine is literally a 1960s one but has transformed my baking and came with a pile of attachments, even used the mincer during the recent National Mince Shortage.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 17/05/2020 08:22

My dd got the Aldi one about 3 years ago. She loved it, and it’s still in good order, but she has now saved madly and bought a kitchenaid. I can’t tell the difference in cake quality!

NotMeNoNo · 17/05/2020 09:21

There are a few sub £100 in Argos. I'd check espares to see if you can get spares for anything you are looking at, Aldi/Lidl are often obscure brands is the thing.

UhKevin · 17/05/2020 09:22

Sorry to hijack but I’ve been wondering about buying a mixer, too. I’m never going to impress Prue Leith (by a country mile!) but I can turn out a reasonable cake and biscuit (don’t really do bread). I feel like now I’m baking more I ‘should’ have a mixer but I’m not sure why? Would it change my baking life?

bluefoxmug · 17/05/2020 09:23

bosch mum.

HannaH021 · 17/05/2020 09:28

I got andrew james stand mixer for something near 100£ cant remember more or less. I hate it. Difficult to control speed, flour flies everywhere when i turn it on. It cant mix little bit of liquid, or small quantity of eggs and sugar because it doesnt fully scrape the bottom, and the bowl keeps moving with it!! Has a dough hook, but dont even think about it.

I got my mum 550£ kenwood for dough making. Bloody powerful, she uses it for meat mincing and lots of other things. Worth every penny

NotMeNoNo · 17/05/2020 09:32

Ah well I couldn't turn out a reasonable cake previously, just many flat sponges over the years. Now I have it I use it for things like scones and pastry too because quick.

MrsFruitcake · 17/05/2020 09:43

We have the Aldi Ambiano mixer, looks nice, has a good motor and warranty and was a bargain at £50. We use it to make bread mainly.

Reluctantbettlynch · 17/05/2020 10:14

Ty @HannaH021, that's helpful as I have other things from Andrew James that have been brilliant, so useful to have that warning.

I would say moderate use, it would probably be 50% dough usage.
