What are you doing with kids this weekend?

In Scotland so still can't meet up with anyone. I've got an injured foot so can't walk far. 2 boys aged 8 and 11, 8 yr old doesn't want to do anything apart from watch TV. I actually dread the weekends, at least on school days they have work to do. I have no inspiration at all. We have a garden and a trampoline but they have been trampolining and kicking a football into the tiny inflatable football goal every day now for 8 weeks. I can't kick a ball right now anyway. We are so fed up. I wish I could think of something that would keep them occupied for a couple of hours, the youngest has an attention span of about 15 minutes max right now. Because of my foot I can't run so really don't need any more home baking. I am so moany, sorry.

If anyone has any genius ideas please share

Crutch, wheelchair and go out

Treasure hunt.

Sports day, It's a knockout style. You're the ref/audience/commentator so you don't need to join in.

Check out the Taskmaster challenges on YouTube and do some of those.

Scavenger hunt.

Watch a film, but do it together with an popcorn so it feels like an activity.

Board game. Or crossword/quiz that you can do together.

AppleKatie · 16/05/2020 10:30

Housework.
Indoor camping with film and popcorn
Disco
Scavenger hunt
Allocate everyone a room in the house they have 20 mins to set up and activity for everyone in that room- as creative or wacky as possible then rotate round the rooms doing all the activities.

We have done things like make our own cinema & McDonald's. We cut a window out of a massive box we had & decorated it. One side is cinema ticket office, the other side is McDonald's. For the cinema the kids (6, 9, 11) made tickets, posters, a food/drink menu & popped popcorn, then we chose a film on Netflix. For the McDonald's we made our own burger, buns & chips from scratch. Both took up a good chunk of time, especially the cinema.

A few home science experiments. Cleaning a copper coin with different substances, rainbow with a paper towel etc.

Lots of board games & card games.

Writing letters & cards to relatives.

If it's warm, let them have a water fight in the garden.

GeriGeranium · 16/05/2020 11:19

Scavenger hunt with clues to lead them around the house and garden? Prize could be a token for cinema night.

Plan your 2021 holiday together - research countries and activities.

Find out what meals they’d like to learn to cook and start them cooking on proper meals not baking.

Ask them to pick a subject or hobby they’d like to research that you can then all try out when the world reopens.

Hoping for some nice weather as I bought DD a paddling pool when I went to Asda the other day so she'll be over the moon with that.

Will keep playing in the garden, drawing with chalk and doing bubbles.

In the house we do wooden puzzles and aqua doodle. Some (too much!) screen time.

She's only 2 so fairly easy to entertain, although it is relentless.

There is nothing to do that we haven't done a million fucking times in the last two months. Nowhere to go. My 3yo (can't talk) looked at some photos of the farm we used to visit, he looked so sad and said "ee I ee I oh?" Meaning can we go to Old McDonalds Farm - I fucking wish DS. Cant see family, cant see friends, no playground, no walk to the library, even feeding the ducks is rubbish because the ducks are over fed by all the bored families and theres a space about the size of a 50p piece you can occupy to social distance and not fall in.

nowaitaminute · 16/05/2020 11:37

Camping with a good ole proper campfire... just getting the energy to get the tent now..🤣

ThatsWhatHeroesDo · 16/05/2020 11:37

We've even run out of paint and chalk and it's not like we can nip to the shops to buy more.

Puddlesplasher · 16/05/2020 11:37

We are getting in the car and driving 30 minutes to our favourite dog walking spot. It's in a beautiful area, the bluebells will be out and it's a wide open space so very easy to avoid people. I haven't been in the car since lockdown began so looking forward to it.

HouseOfSticks · 16/05/2020 11:37

@Loveita what a load of rubbish. Where is OP meant to get a wheelchair from?!

Puddlesplasher · 16/05/2020 11:38

Sorry I realise that reply doesn't help you OP! I was answering your first question. Hope your foot gets better soon Thanks

nowaitaminute · 16/05/2020 11:40

I also realised my answer doesn't help...sorry

confusedofengland · 16/05/2020 11:41

You can make your own paint. May take up a while, too Wink

ThatsWhatHeroesDo · 16/05/2020 11:43

I get that you're trying to help but like many people, I don't have a lot of spare flour or much, ie any, food colouring around.

MrsJBaptiste · 16/05/2020 11:48

My kids are older (13 & 16) and today's plans are:

Leisurely breakfast
PS4 / TV
Walk (each child is meeting one friend)
Gardening
Exercise YouTube video
BBQ
PS4 / TV

MrsJBaptiste · 16/05/2020 11:51

We've even run out of paint and chalk and it's not like we can nip to the shops to buy more

Are you shielding? Otherwise Wilkos, etc. are open for paint and stuff.

SistemaAddict · 16/05/2020 11:53

Baking/trying new recipes
Having a good sort out/tidy
Film tonight
Trying not to put them on eBay Grin

TwoZeroTwoZero · 16/05/2020 12:13

Put the tv on, sling them some pop and biscuits and let them chill until dinnertime. If you have a garden, let them loose out there. Make them find their own fun, which they will if they're bored enough and you just refuse to listen to the cries of, "I'm bored!" or set up the entertainment for them.

Noworrieshere · 16/05/2020 12:13

Well one has gone back to bed and the other is doing a jigsaw. That will keep him busy for 20 minutes. Yesterday I recklessly said that we were having an xbox free day, now I am regretting that.

I think it's me that's got the problem as much as them, my enthusiasm for building assault courses in the living room is pretty much zero right now.

And even if I could magic up a wheelchair I do not fancy getting pushed around in it by my kids. I would end up with much worse than tendonitis in my foot. Although wheelchair stunts would probably entertain them for quite a long time.

I wish it would rain then I would feel less under pressure to do fun and exciting things, we could just watch a movie.

I want to go swimming, trampolining, go to the library, the beach. I want to go with 8 yr old to the book shop, choose a new book each then read in the cafe. That could easily fill a whole day.

Really I should have titled my thread Bored mother with a really sore foot can't be f*ing bothered any more and doesn't actually want any practical suggestions, just wants to moan. Sorry.

ThatsWhatHeroesDo · 16/05/2020 12:35

I hear ya OP. I could google shit to do with my kids if they were bored but really it's me. Anyway I've dragged them into the garden and tickled them a bit which has helped my mood at least.

GeriGeranium · 16/05/2020 12:35

I had a broken foot this time last year, so lots of sympathy! Honestly I’d just let them watch tv/do gaming for now.

Noworrieshere · 16/05/2020 12:44

Decided. They are going to entertain (hah) themselves till 2.30pm when we are going to watch a film and once that's finished they can have xbox. Then another day is done, yay!
