People who are good with interior design: best colour furniture for orange walled living room?

Say if you had a mid-orange (not too dark or too light) living room, what colour would you get the leather sofa, curtains, hardwood flooring and show cabinet in to best suit the place and make it look as big and area and complementary as possible.

Possible oranges for the walls are:

And attached image.

Thanks :)

If you have a determination to go with orange walls but no idea on anything else, and enough money for the accoutrements you listed, I strongly advise that you hire someone to help you decide.

You’re unlikely to want to keep the room orange for decades, so to be honest, I wouldn’t choose furniture to complement a specific colour of wall.

I'd go for the exact opposite colour for the furnishings - so a teal blue - but I'd go with fabric, not leather. Then I'd keep all the woods light and neutral, but have a few accents (e.g. picture frames) in black.

I would say you shouldn’t overload it if you want it light so go with the very close grey and brown, choosing lighter or darker for different things depending on how sunny the room could be. I personally don’t like light leather sofas so it would affect my choice, could you get a very dark orange one? The main thing is flooring as you wouldn’t change it often. Take a sample and try it at home. We did it and several nice ones didn’t work with our walls at all.

Thanks so far

Go with navy, teal blues sofas, dark oak floors, dark wood and lots of plants and mirrors, you could get a really warm feel if you enjoy the orange colours.

If you wanted to go all out with colour magenta pink looks great against orange.

That way if you do change your mind on orange in the future so many other colours would work with the navy and teal furniture.

wowfudge · 16/05/2020 10:10

I'd stick to fairly neutral, like the furnishings in the photo you linked to. Anything else will be really full on and too much. Yes blue is a complimentary colour to orange but orange and teal in your living room?

Knan10 · 16/05/2020 17:37

Yes I was leaning towards neutral too but not sure what neutral - like grey or brown? And then what shade etc?

Nighttimefreedom · 16/05/2020 17:39

Why not as in the pictures? The one in the room in the link is nicest I think.

wowfudge · 16/05/2020 18:27

It's got cream, grey/brown and dark brown wood in it.

Knan10 · 17/05/2020 13:38

Thanks everyone so far for the helpful input. Do people generally prefer the dark brown floors (in the link pic) over the pale cream floors (in the attached image) for orange walls?

I'd prefer a dark brown leather sofa purely for the reason stains will be less obvious on it but feel perhaps mid-grey will make the room look brighter.

I'd go for natural wood, natural fabrics in a neutral colour for the sofa and curtains. That way, when you change the colour of the walls in, ooh, about ten seconds time, they will still fit in with your new colour scheme.

Knan10 · 17/05/2020 14:05

Thanks @Zaphodsotherhead what neutral colours would you go for?

Do you think the colour of the walls will be changed because orange isn't bearable for long or because people tend to change wall colours fairly frequent regardless of what colour it is? lol

Brown and lime green go with orange.

Zaphodsotherhead · 17/05/2020 14:56

To be honest @Knan10, I think orange would very quickly become hard to live with. If there's any natural sunshine coming in, that orange is going to look very very unnatural and bright and, dare I say it, a wee bit '1970s'

I would go with natural jute, hessian, undyed linen, natural wood (but not too dark), very plain decor. That way the walls themselves are the 'feature' of the room. Plus, you can change the colour and the furniture will still fit in, presuming you wouldn't want to, or be able to, afford to change absolutely EVERYTHING if you decide to repaint.

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 17/05/2020 15:00

I would rather paint the wall, it costs nothing compared to buying furniture to match it. Besides, who uses orange these days?

Knan10 · 17/05/2020 15:27

The wall isn’t orange currently - I’m more thinking of doing it that colour as I like the brightness and it’s a nice warm optimistic colour

Zaphodsotherhead · 17/05/2020 15:35

Maybe think about yellow instead? It's bright, warm and sunny and a bit less...ahem, strident than orange. You can tone in paler yellow walls with one brighter one - it's also slightly easier on the eye. You can still use the neutral coloured furniture, but you could go with darker natural wood.

Knan10 · 22/05/2020 12:34

Thanks - I kinda considered yellow but still would prefer orange I think
