Cake mix for two tins, in one tin ?

sparklefarts · 15/05/2020 13:20

Betty Crocker devils food chocolate cake mix. Says split into two tins, annoyingly I only have one tin..

I can't be bothered to cook it in two batches, could i put all of the mixture and cook it for longer? Maybe at a lower heat? Then cut in half to put icing in the middle?

Mainly this is because my four year old is already asking when we can ice and eat it

It takes a very long time to cook the mix in one huge tin. You might as well do it in two batches.

sparklefarts · 15/05/2020 13:27

I was wondering if this would be the case..two batches it it.

I really need to buy more tins.

You can but it will need longer to cook.

I often make all the mix in one tin when I bake and slice in half

In my Be-ro book for a Victoria sponge it says 20-25 mins for two shallow tins or 40-45 mins for one deep tin.

But there's a risk it will be burnt on the outside before it's cooked in the middle. You could shield the tin with paper like you do with Christmas cake, but when you get to that level of faffing, you might as well do it in two batches.

If you're not bothered with presentation and the 4 YO and you really can't wait for cake, you could do two 'half moon' shaped cakes instead of one round one. Then you can be getting on with eating cake 1 while cake 2 is in the oven.

I'd like to take this opportunity to declare that I am a complete and utter idiot.

I was reminded by DH that I bought another tin after having this problem last time.

Er, whoops.

sparklefarts, I love your honesty! You could have got away with not confessing that one 😂

Haha love the confession. Enjoy the fruits of your labour.

amymel2016 · 15/05/2020 14:11

I always make a massive Betty Crocker using a packet for each tin Blush just cook it slightly lower for longer

NameChangeOctober · 15/05/2020 14:17

This thread made me so happy - first the fab idea of two half moon cakes and then the appearance of an extra tin.

What on earth is going to happen next?

sparklefarts · 15/05/2020 14:20

Haha all I have to do now is take it out of the oven on time!

And not drop it. Like I did with the third layer to the layer cake I made last year. Sigh.

You are all my kind of people Grin 🍰

sparklefarts · 15/05/2020 14:26

Haha.
I've also previously wondered if I did have to tins (alas I do) if I could do a whole packet in each and have a giant cake.

I'm not giving up that idea just yet.

I had this problem with Betty Crocker and ended up making muffins because I had a muffin tin.

@sparklefarts oh man, just give me a fork and half an hour with that beauty.

Fenlandmountainrescue · 15/05/2020 16:14

It was worth the wait, then! 🤤

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 15/05/2020 16:15

Ooh I could go a slab of that with a generous spoon of clotted cream

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 15/05/2020 16:21

That looks delicious.

Just gonna float a suggestion. Cut a slice, in a bowl, blitz in the microwave for 20 seconds and top with squirty cream.

sparklefarts · 15/05/2020 16:22

@Connie222 haha its a bit sweet! Can't eat too much. And I'm nearly 17st so I am an expert on eating.

OP posts:
sparklefarts · 15/05/2020 16:23

@TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 oh I am definitely doing to be putting a slice in the microwave for ten seconds or so later.
Think I might pint for vanilla ice cream instead tho Grin
