UTI, can I fix this at home or do I have to go to the GP?

I have woken up today and it was absolute agony to have a wee, the pain was at the bottom of my stomach inside me as such, it was really painful. My kidneys started hurting after that

Ive been drinking cranberry juice all morning but my kidneys are still slightly hurting

Do you think i need to go and get antibiotics from the GP or can I fix this at home?

I'd phone your gp. They might do a phone consultation

LunaNightSky · 15/05/2020 09:40

You need to speak to your Doctor, if your kidneys are hurting it could be going to a kidney infection and you could end up in hospital.

Ring your GP to catch it now before it gets worse, it won't get better on its own. Thanks

Definitely GP.

Last time I had uti before lockdiwn I was prescribed antibiotics over the phone and told to see them if it got worse. So call gp.

Thighmageddon · 15/05/2020 09:49

If you've already got pain or tenderness in the kidney area then you really need to speak to your Gp rather than ask us for advice.

AvoidingRealHumans · 15/05/2020 09:50

Definitely ring your GP. I had this years ago and I ended up in hospital with a kidney infection. Worst pain ever

Grandmi · 15/05/2020 09:53

Speak to GP Asap!! Gp can send a prescription to your local pharmacy for ABs .

Thanks for the replies

The receptionist said to go and get a sample pot, go home and fill it then bring it back. I'm just waiting for DD to wake up so I can take her with me

I used to get them a lot when i was younger but never had pain like this before, I have been drinking a lot more coffee and alcohol than i usually would so I wonder if that is to blame

Glad you’re getting sorted op! Kidney infections are horrendous, so the sooner you get anti-b’s the better! Hope you feel better ASAP.

Thank you

Ive had mild UTI's in the past but always caught them early and cranberry juice worked.

I was hoping people would say just drink even more cranberry juice Grin

The receptionist said they'd send my sample to the hospital,

When I had a suspected UTI when i was pregnant the doctor tested it there and then , is this not the case anymore? I don't really want to wait a few days for antibiotics

They will dip it immediately in the surgery and the Dr can prescribe anti biotics for you and send the script to the chemist within a few hours. Probably nitrofurentoin (not sure of spelling!)

The quicker you get the sample to them the better. If you can take a sample in a jam jar or such like, they might let you decant into their sample pot save you going home and returning. With GP surgeries being closed to walk ins, it depends on your surgery set up. You might be allowed in a downstairs toilet, or you could try and discreetly do it outside. Ask them to label the pot for you first.

Sending it to the hospital is just procedure, not for diagnosis. HTH

Thighmageddon · 15/05/2020 10:25

They send it to the hospital so they can see what bacteria is causing the infection to make sure you're on the right antibiotic.

NoShameInNameChanging6262626 · 15/05/2020 10:27

I asked if i could bring a sample myself and she said I'd have to go home and then bring it back Grin i felt a bit grim for suggesting it then

DD's eaten breakfast, just getting dressed now.

( shes not normally this late to wake up but We have lost all sense of routine the past few weeks )

My DH has diabetes and keeps sample pots at home all the time. It's not such a daft question! Good luck though.

typicallyatypical · 15/05/2020 10:37

Don't feel grim about a bit of urine, it's a perfectly normal bodily fluid, GP surgeries, and receptionists deal with far worse.

In normal times, you'd have been able to go in and use the toilet in the surgery, so it's annoying that they can't accommodate that but it is what it is at the moment. If you are driving, could you jus take your own sample and decant in the car outside?

You still won't necessarily need to speak to a GP and it will all be sorted in a few hours if you need a script. UTIs left untreated can affect your behaviour quite badly, so it needs diagnosing.

Frownette · 15/05/2020 10:37

I had one once and still remember jumping up from the loo like a scalded cat as it was painful trying to pee. Mine passed in a couple of days.

Glad you're getting it sorted with GP and hope it clears soon.

NoShameInNameChanging6262626 · 15/05/2020 19:12

The receptionist said they would dip the sample before they sent it to the hospital and ring if anything came up

They havnt tried to ring but have sent a text telling me to pick up a prescription from pharmacy. It was sent at 4:50 but I have only just seen it

It's too late now so I'll have to go first thing in the morning before they close for the weekend
