Is sport class based now?

Just watched Senna in C4. Fabulous film.
However reminded me that F1 used to be a “ thing’ in the 1990’s A popular posh sport, followed in pubs. Less so now,

So what’s the opposite to football now? I don’t think it’s cycling because there’s no coolness or glamour. It’s all about times and performance drugs.

Are sports just what lots people do in life to a pretty high standard rather than be something special.

Rugby?

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 15/05/2020 01:23

Maybe tennis or cricket?

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/05/2020 01:28

I always think of cricket as being posh.
I had no idea F1 was posh, I followed it from the late 90's, religiously for years, still keep half an eye on it and I'm really not posh!

I don't really think of any sport as posh. I never thought F1 was.

Croquet, polo and fencing are all posh but are not v mainstream! I guess rugby and tennis would be seen as more posh that football for example.

I don't know whether it's because it's late or I have wine but struggling with the question 'what is the opposite of football?'

Butterymuffin · 15/05/2020 01:45

It's always been class based. Some of that is about who can get into sports at professional level. You can become a top footballer as a working class kid with no money. Not so with tennis, polo, etc.

As an Australian who's lived in the UK for 12 years now and played cricket socially that whole time, i would say cricket is in certain regions, especially in the South, less so in somewhere like Yorkshire. Tennis is especially posh as well. Both of these sports in Australia are played by all levels of society.

Rugby is the poshest in the UK and Australia though (excluding Wales)

Cruddles · 15/05/2020 07:55

Also as a former F1 buff i think you need to be rich to make it as a driver, but i don't think of the fans as posh, they're more of the anorak brigade

Rugby is the poshest in the UK

Rugby union is posh, Rugby league is not. I know that there are differences in the rules of the game, but none of them related to being posh/not posh or accessibility.

Perhaps rugby is the poster child for the illogical-ness of the English/UK class system. Not sure why tennis is seen as being less accessible than other sports either. You don't need expensive equipment or particularly specialist facilities. Yes I know there is some cost, but the same can be said for football, boxing etc and class/income isn't always related anyway.

It's just another thing that the UK is very odd about. Sport, food, all manner of things, that are universal across demographics in other countries, as in the tennis cricket in Australia as mentioned above, yet in the UK people get tied up in arguments about class, demographics, accessibility etc.
