My dad’s passion since he was a child was horses. He lived and breathed them and after he got married he (with my mother’s significant help!) was finally able to afford a house with a bit of land and he bought his first horse that he broke and reared to become a champion cross country girl before living out her final days with him and dying aged 23. (He had others along the way too) Talking to him about anything horse related was like opening an encyclopaedia. He wasn’t an educated man but when it came to horses I doubt there was a book printed that he didn’t own. He could talk all four legs off any horse he encountered.

Ive come across MNers who are extremely knowledgeable in various things, like Latin, or World War II, or ballet, or DIY, or dogs. It fascinates me.

I, however, know nothing. Sometimes I forget which way to turn the key in the front door Blush I am absolutely crap at retaining information. I have studied and achieved brilliant grades in exams. But ask me about the topic a week later and you’ll get a blank stare.

So, fascinate me all you interesting people! What’s your thing?

All the knowledgable people must be off reading up on their specialist subjects Grin

I think we're better at listening than talking brilliantly Grin

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 14/05/2020 22:25

So it would seem! Grin

I’m so bored- I was hoping to learn about some obscure hobbies!

Bikes, boats and ballet. (In that order)
Though I am more enthusiastic than hugely knowledgeable.

SassenachWitch · 14/05/2020 22:34

Hmm, interesting question.

I wouldn’t say I have a specialist subject, but I can chat shit for hours.

I know a fair bit about horseboxes.

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 14/05/2020 22:51

@MrsAvocet

Pedal bikes or motorbikes? Little row boats or motor boats or yachts? My sister knows her stuff on Viking boats.

I know a fair bit about horseboxes.

Ifor Williams. That’s it. That’s the extent of my horse box knowledge! Grin

DD Grin Grin

A bit about wine. A bit about literature. Mostly "bad" literature (think terry pratchett)

Like a pp, though, I can talk bollocks all day long!

MrsAvocet · 15/05/2020 00:06

Pedal bikes Chandler, specifically road and track cycling. I know a bit about cyclocross too, but very little about mountain biking and absolutely nothing about BMX. And sailing boats. We've got a couple of dinghies and a small yacht. Yacht always sounds a bit grandiose though, and ours definitely isn't!

FizzyPink · 15/05/2020 00:12

I’m quite knowledgeable about skincare. It kills me when people blindly go and buy 20 products from the ordinary and then post asking for advice. Also posters who claim not to need to wear SPF as they don’t live in a hot country Hmm

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 15/05/2020 00:14

Yes a yacht sounds very posh. I live close to a few sailing clubs and marinas though so I see lots of little not posh yachts. Grin and some lovely posh ones too!

@MsAnnThropic I could probably bend your ear all day about that. My DS had speech delay and then It was just indecipherable for years when he did start. Very interesting topic!

The most special specialist subject! Grin

Chickens. Reusable nappies. The archers. Crimes, murders and serial killers. You'd guess none of this if you just met me Grin

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 15/05/2020 00:26

Serial killers and psychopathology.

Oh your dad sounds wonderful!

I'm not very well educated but I have decent general knowledge and a fair amount of curiosity which keeps my mind active and engaged in all sorts of things.
But if you really want to light my fire, I have a keen interest in war: Vietnam, the American civil war, the Russian Revolution, the Cambodian civil war, The Yugoslav wars, the World Wars, Sri Lankan civil war... you name it, I'll immerse myself in the history of those countries and their people and the factors which encouraged conflict.
This interest ties in with my interest in sociology and the history of us, of people.

And dogs. I love dogs. I'm always reading about dogs, their breeds, behaviour, etc. I love watching them in our local meadow and seeing their breed characteristics come to the fore.

Trees. I'm always admiring them, identifying them. When you know your trees, there's a real intimacy that unfolds between you and them. You're not just walking among a bunch of beautiful trees, you're walking among lindens or plums, sycamores or horse chestnut and this intensifies the feelings we have for trees.

I'm beginning to sound like a pretentious weirdo here, so I'll just stop. But it's such a gift, having a keen interest and love for something (or many things) and developing a real knowledge in that interest. And the beautiful thing is, you don't need to have a degree or letters after your name or prove anything to anyone. You just have to immerse yourself in the love of learning about that specific 'thing' that floats your boat.

The Titanic and 'classic' ocean liners (not cruise ships. They're not the same!). My knowledge has dwindled considerably since having children, sadly. One day I'll read all my books again. I feel all wistful thinking about them. I watched a Mastermind episode once with a specialist subject of the Titanic, and aced it!

Church bellringing.
Which of course is impossible at the moment seeing as the churches are closed.
So I have to talk about it, because I can't actually do it.
