How do i register with a doctor?

I moved a year ago and never got round to registering with a doctor (i know not great, but generally keep well and have no need to access gp etc) but the whole lockdown situation has got me wondering about whether i would face any difficulties accessing healthcare if im not registered in the area?

Would it be difficult do you think to register with one now, are they even taking on new patients atm?

Where are you in the country (roughly)? Think it’s different for different areas.

Research what surgery you want to be registered at (has to be local to you), then phone them and see what they're doing.

i recently registered my newborn with a GP and they posted the registration forms to me, then I posted it back to them and they phoned to confirm he'd been registered.

Just phone the one that you want to register with and ask them.

Google gp surgery’s in your area
Choose one
Call them and they will advise on what you normally do

When I registered at my current one I filled in a form, showed passport ID and that was that

Dh tried to register at a new one when we moved but none round here are taking new patents due to covid.

Their advice if he was ill was to access care though 111. There are loads of private gps here though - I’m not registered with an nhs GP at all, so that’s who me and the kids see, so that may be an option for you.

Connie222 thats what im worried about, i cant imagine its high on the list of priorities, but then i wouldnt know what to do if u got ill during this.

I know the one i want to register with (same one as dp) and had a look on their website but no info regarding new patients. Will give them a phone tomorrow, a form in the post to send back would be good if they do that. I have access to a printer so can send a copy of my passport/drivers license if needed as well through the post.

The ones Dh called all said they couldn’t take on new patients as they couldn’t see you in person for an initial check with the nurse. He didn’t have that last time he registered with one, so wondering if it’s just our area?

yikesanotherbooboo · 14/05/2020 19:47

Iv your DP is already registered they will probably accept you and follow the posting forms scenario.

I moved home at beginning of lockdown. After a month phoned up local doctors to see how to register. They are still working just with no patients. I was able to collect forms brought outside, which I filled in then handed back in. Was easy enough.

Phoned this morning and despite a recorded message at first saying that everything was done over the phone and only in rare situations would the GP want to see you and you could come to the surgery, you were not allowed to come near the building, the receptionist was lovely and friendly, amd told me to pop along to pick up a form! So went in with all my ID etc, filled the form in in the car and dropped it back in, so all done and sorted!
