What is this horrid house plant??

AnduinsGirl · 14/05/2020 11:37

Please help me identify this; it has cursed my life for the last 4 years but I cannot chuck it away as my late Gran gave it to me and told me to "bring some life back to it." Honestly, it's horrid. It doesn't flower, it just sits there on top of my drinks cupboard leering down because it knows I won't chuck it!
I've just re-potted it and removed the dead bits. It had a HUGE root system of big thick roots, so I definitely need a bigger pot for it. But can anyone tell me what it is please? Can I expect flowers at least??

No idea, I have just downloaded an app call Picture This, that names all plants, it’s ace.

StCharlotte · 14/05/2020 11:47

Is it a Yucca?

(Yucca by name...)

AnduinsGirl · 14/05/2020 11:49

I think yuccas are more trees, but I see the similarity! Have tried an app but no luck so far...possibly because it's just a load of leaves!! :(

The app PlantNet might be able to tell you. Sorry I have no idea but I've used the app a lot and it's pretty good!

mindutopia · 14/05/2020 11:50

My plant app tells me it’s a ‘noble orchid’. I really know nothing about orchids, but do you think there is any chance it is?

FlibbertyGiblets · 14/05/2020 11:52

A Dracena maybe? Sanseviera?

AlCalavicci · 14/05/2020 11:55

I have no idea at all but I am in envy of the view you have ! Envy

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 14/05/2020 11:59

Looks like an iris to me. Not a houseplant, I know, but appears similar.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 14/05/2020 11:59

My plant app also says Noble Orchid
It doesn’t look particularly spectacular when it flowers either!

BambooWhoosh · 14/05/2020 12:01

Could it be an aspidistra?

Try asking on gardening?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/05/2020 12:01

I’ve looked in my House Plant Expert book, but it’s not at all conclusive.

Could possibly be a dracaena type - there are many varieties, such as Cordyline australis aka Grass Palm, and Dracaena draco, aka Dragon Tree, or a bromeliad that might flower in the right conditions - Tillandsia lindenii aka Blue Flowered Torch.

Illustration in the book are too small to post here - google should bring up photos.

TrickyKid · 14/05/2020 12:02

Winter orchid?

AnduinsGirl · 14/05/2020 12:05

Oh! I think it's a noble orchid as @mindutopia said - it rings a bell actually - I think I remember my mum saying it was an orchid! God if it looks like that, I'll be super happy. I'll check all these suggestions though thanks - I appreciate the help. And @AlCalavicci thanks - I LOVE the view here too!

We've got a ground orchid like that looks something like that. If it is, it needs a tallish thinish pot (like 15 cm wide by 25cm tall). Stick it outside from June to August and it will at least look better for the light and be off your cupboard.

My husband loves the bloody things, but never manages to get them to flower after the flowers he bought them with died.

MellowMelly · 14/05/2020 12:13

I was stuck between an Orchid and Iris. The leaves and roots/root system also look like that of some types of Iris. Almost tuberous.
If it is an Iris and it’s not flowering it could be that it needs dividing (they need dividing every 3/4 years) otherwise it won’t flower.

AnduinsGirl · 14/05/2020 12:17

Yes to tuberous rooting! Made me feel a bit sick as it looked like maggots haha. Well, I've stripped it back to just the living bits and it looks a lot better...must look up how to care for them. I'm quite good with normal orchids usually!

@lekkerkroketje tell hubby to try a clear pot so.roots see sunlight! A close family friend swears by it! Not sure if it's how mine have flowered or not but I now get 2 flowering a year! Took a while though so be patient! Good luck!

NanTheWiser · 14/05/2020 12:27

It's not an orchid, but does look a bit like an iris-type of plant. Stick it outside in the garden, keep it watered, and see what happens.

goingoverground · 14/05/2020 12:27

It might be a spathoglottis orchid, they grow in the ground. Was it in its original pot? Did it have soil in it or was it a clear pot with bark chips in it? Most orchids are epiphytic, they grow on trees so they don't need soil.

goingoverground · 14/05/2020 12:30

Here are some pics:

They have pseudobulbs, the tuberous rooting you mentioned.

WantToBeMum · 14/05/2020 12:31

No idea what the plant is but the view from your terrace looks stunning!

AnduinsGirl · 14/05/2020 12:43

Thank you for the kind comments about the view btw. Looking to sell next year and hoping that will appeal to someone!
