Bloody hellfire, in agony with my back!

Put my back out spectacularly today... bending down to pick DD’s bloody scooter up off the sitting room floor (grrr dd).

Phoned gp, have co codamol and diazepam, but still in absolute agony. No numbness/pins and needles/loss of bladder control etc, so def just spasms.

Is there anything else I can do??

I think hot water bottle on your back helps. Is it base of the spine? Either way if it's gone into spasm it will take about 3/4 days to go down a bit then tbh sorry overall 10/14 days to settle.

TeddyIsaHe · 14/05/2020 08:18

Yes, just above my bum. It’s horrendous this morning. At home alone with a 3 year old also which isn’t the best scenario!

If you can, take some brufen. I found the combination of codeine, brufen and paracetamol was the only thing that did the trick. Plus a hot water bottle ! Try to keep moving too although you’ve got a toddler so doubt you’ll be stuck on the sofa !

My osteopath recommended alternating ice packs and heat.

She also gave me some exercises to ease it out. I would hesitate To suggest these though as obviously I'm not trained!

SoupDragon · 14/05/2020 08:28

Definitely keep moving - slowly and gently.

I've screwed my back up from spending lockdown on the sofa 🤦🏻‍♀️

ShipshapeShore · 14/05/2020 08:31

I did the same thing the other day but not as badly. A hot water bottle on the base of your back definitely eases it.

paap1975 · 14/05/2020 08:33

I feel your pain, had to see my osteopath on Tuesday. Hot water bottle and keep moving (gently). I hope it passes soon!

ponchek · 14/05/2020 08:37

I had it in Jan - apparently a cold blast of wind on the lower back can do it!

I found that after the spasm went (10 days) that doing the yoga movements on all fours where you arch you back then make it concave really helped to loosen and strengthen the area.

So sorry Teddy - it really hurts 😥 Strap a hot water bottle to your sacrum!!

TeddyIsaHe · 14/05/2020 08:40

I’ll YouTube some gentle physio moves I think. Thankfully Dd is finding it hilarious: mummy, why are you walking like a crab? Grin

Voltarol 2.32% gel helped my back, along with co-codamol. You could buy the smallest tube and see how you get on with that?

doughnuthole · 14/05/2020 08:52

I get this and echo using a hot water bottle. Also ibuprofen gel so you can apply it direct to the site of the pain. If you need to get some from the pharmacy pick up some laxatives as well as the cocodamol will bung you up and the last thing you need is to be straining for a poo. Sorry if that's tmi. Lastly check out some gentle yoga poses, cat stretch works well for me, and there was one time when I found that I was pain-free in child pose, not that you can do that all day but it was good to know that I could shuffle around, get dressed, stretch for relief, shove a wash on, stretch, make a sandwich, stretch etc etc.
In the long term maybe try yoga or Pilates to strengthen your core and prevent it becoming a recurring problem. I have managed to reduce the frequency with which it happens to me. Be mindful how you move and pick things up. The last twice has been because I've bent quickly to move something when in a strop.

Pull your knees right up to your chest, it should release your back a bit, sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees and your legs pulled right up. I had an anular tear it was so painful, I really feel for you. There’s loads of exercises you can do lying down to ease the pain. Good luck and don’t force your back straight.

SoupDragon · 14/05/2020 09:00

If you have to cough or sneeze, give yourself a strong hug at the same time! Constricting the ribs like this really helps to stop your back flaring in pain when you sneeze/cough :)

Nishky · 14/05/2020 09:04

When I buggered my shoulder I was told ice for 2-3 days followed by heat. Easier to apply to shoulders and without a toddler though.

Pricey and not environmentally friendly but those hot and cold pads you stick on may help if someone can get to the chemist for you

TeddyIsaHe · 14/05/2020 09:19

I’ve got a huge bottle of lactulose so will neck some of that. Thanks for the tip, forgot how bad Co codamol is for that.

If you can get someone to go to a pharmacy for you a £20 TENS machine will do the trick.

This is the one I used when I slipped a disc in December.

TeddyIsaHe · 14/05/2020 09:25

Tens machine! I still have one from labour. Why did I not think of this?! Thank you!

A good man gently stroking the small of your back for hours and hours, interspersed with stroking your hair and telling you what an amazing woman you are and how wonderful a mother and how he can't quite believe his luck that he's getting to stroke your back! That would work for me! (so long as he said it in a way that didn't make him seem too eager to please) (and so long as I found him attractive!! 😂)

Think about something nice, OP ....
