Mirena coil and the menopause?

deffonamechange · 13/05/2020 20:36

Sooo many questions.

I am on my 3rd mirena coil. Its worked well for me. Tiny spotting once a month and forget about it otherwise. I have put weight on but no idea if it's related to the coil.

Anyway, blood tests show I am peri menopausal. I'm still having spotting once a month.

What will happen? Will periods just stop? Even though I have the coil in? How do I know when I'm out the other side of menopause? The gp said to me 'this coil should see you through the menopause '. I dont know what that means?? Someone told me mirena can be used instead of hrt to ease menopausal symptoms.

Anyone been through this and dont suppose you had it out and weight fell off? (She asks hopefully)

I had the Mirena put in as part of her.It gives low levels of progesterone and I have oestrogen gel.
Some say that hrt makes you put on weight bit I went on a diet and have lost 2.5 stone but stalled by lockdown.

And will your periods just carry on until after menopause? They eventually fade off regardless of whether you have coil or not?

I'm on my 4th and last, I'm late 50s, had this one put in about age 45, the doctor said the same as yours OP, no periods or spotting since I was 30, tbh, menopause was/is a breeze compared with most of my friends, not too many hot flushes/mood swings/weight gain etc. I'm leaving it right where it is unless anything changes.

I had my last one put in @5 years ago, I’m now nearly 51 and GP says it can stay in and yes help with menopause. I’m peri now, some hot sweats and flushes but very minimal really and I also had same advice that it could be topped up with patches if I need it, but so far so good. My weight gain is purely due to more frequently drinking wine and eating chocolate during lockdown... I’ve used it for more than 15 years, no periods for years, only change I have noticed recently related to peri is less discharge of any kind.

Yes I'm drying up downstairs too.

So if mirena stops periods how do you know you are through the menopause? When can it come out?

How can they help if they've only got enough hormone in for five years? ConfusedNurse told me mine was doing nothing (been in 7 years) anymore and it could stay there doing nothing till the end of my days.

I'm 51 and relatively symptom free with a tiny bit of spotting but always had that since mirena went in - also wondering whether I'm out the other side yet!

TawnyPippit · 13/05/2020 22:55

I’m in sort of the same position. I think they do some testing of your hormone levels? My second mirena was expiring and even though I was 54 the dr said after doing a blood test that it looked as though I was having a late menopause and was not completely in the clear. So they chucked in a 3rd one to see me though to 58 ish and I’m assuming I won’t need one after that. I also have gel, utrogeston (sp?) tablets and some vagifem.. My dr and I both like meds!

I'm on my third Mirena. Had my first one - 2001 - 2007,second one - 2007 -2014,this one 2014 - current day. I had one put in because I was experiencing very heavy, very painful periods in my late thirties, and although I had definitely finished with having babies,my doctor wouldn't refer me for a hysterectomy because I was considerably overweight. The Mirena worked like a dream. Within 6 months,I had barely any monthly bleeding, just occasional light spotting and no pain.
I had my current one put in in July 2014 and was told that I should have it removed in July last year and that it would be the last one I needed as I'd be 3 months off my 56th birthday. Well,I didn't bother having it removed as my GP said that it could be safely left in for 8 years as I wasn't relying on it for contraceptive purposes. I assume that I've been through the menopause,I mean how many women in their 57th year haven't?! But,hand on heart,I have had no symptoms whatsoever, and as I've not had a period since i was 39,it's hard to tell. Whether it's the Mirena that's contributed to me having no signs of the menopause, I have no idea! I'm interested to read other poster's experiences.

Regarding weight loss/gain,when I had my first Mirena put in,I weighed just over 19 and a half stone. I have been gradually losing weight over the last 2 years, and have lost 64 pounds, and I am now 14 stone. So I haven't found the Mirena a barrier to losing weight.

I’m still bleeding slightly some days bad period pain I’ve had 18 months of hell with periods polyps I had my coil fitted in January I hope soon my bleeding and pains stop, today has been a good day pain wise.

Notrightbutok · 14/05/2020 11:05

I had Mirena fitted just over 12 months ago. I was still getting regular heavy periods then. I'm 52 now and my periods seem to have petered out. Got a couple of days of spotting but nothing for last few months. Not sure if it's the Mirena or Menopause. I don't have any other symptoms (touch wood)

Notrightbutok · 14/05/2020 11:07

Meant to add, I've had no weight gain. I lost a lot of weight 18 months ago and have worked hard to keep it off by exercise.

Tashtegotoo · 14/05/2020 11:14

I had a mirena fitted just over 10 years ago. I don't need it for contraception since DH became XH about 5 years ago. I've been told as I don't need to for contraception to keep it in until it stops having an effect. Until very recently mirenas had to be paid for where I live so I'm happy to keep it in and it's not a service my local gp provides. I have minimal spotting every few months and nothing else of note.
Following scans for something unrelated it was noted mine is now inverted but no one seems to be worried about that either. I do wonder sometimes how easy it will be to get out!

Zaphodsotherhead · 14/05/2020 11:15

I'm glad to hear that others are being advised that their Mirena can stay in.

Mine's been in about 10 years. I'm 59, coil stopped my periods and I've had no other meno symptoms at all. Whether that was the coil or I'm just lucky, I don't know. But my surgery keeps calling me in to have the coil removed. I've got vaginal atrophy, and am single with no sex, the whole thought of anyone going up there makes me cringe. So I've said I'll leave it where it is, thank you. But they still keep trying to get me in to have it removed!

Samcro · 14/05/2020 11:19

i kept mine in until I had had no periods of any description for a year. then it was removed. I was worried I would then hit the M head on.
but Zilch. well over the M age now. so must have been lucky.
I have had no problems with dryness.(im 59)
