Charities refusing (significant) donations

Rapper 6ix9ine has had a $200,000 (£163,000) donation to a children's charity rejected.

The No Kid Hungry campaign said it has a policy of rejecting funding from donors who do not fit with its values.

(contd)

(Presumably the donation was not made anonymously, so there may be a little more than meets the eye here.)

Why are the charities "values" worth more than the good $200,000 could do ?

If I were a donor to that charity, I wouldn't be now.

Or am I missing something ?

He was charged with child sex offences a few years ago.

It's a children's charity.

I think they were right to refuse.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/05/2020 15:37

If Jimmy Saville was alive today I don't think charities would be lining up.

iVampire · 13/05/2020 15:38

I think they were right to refuse too

And this is an extremely clear case and the charity should be praised for its principles

Wheresthebiffer2 · 13/05/2020 15:39

Totally agree they are right to refuse his dirty money.

JoJothesquirrel · 13/05/2020 15:41

I stopped donating to a charity when they took money from a (famous and rich) sex offender.

Of course as I noted, the donation could have been made anonymously Hmm (I am not closely acquainted with UK or US charity law to know if such a thing is possible).

Presumably the charities charter allows for such actions ?

Shame children have to miss out though.

All charities have a position on ethical donations. This policy won't have been pulled out of thin air and actually the people who donate to charities usually choose one that aligns with their values and trust their decisions regarding funding.
It's only people who don't donate to charities who get outraged when they realise charities have ethical policies about donations.

Yes. He's a violent lout, quite literally a gangster. I can't imagine anyone that could agree with his values.Or, quite likely, the source of his money!

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/05/2020 15:43

I'm sure his accountant could have found a way but chose not to. Once the charity knows, they know.

MuthaClucker · 13/05/2020 15:45

I imagine more children would ‘miss out’ if they accepted donations from sex offenders looking for a good publicity stunt

megletthesecond · 13/05/2020 15:46

He's just come out of prison and has a very dodgy past with child sex offences. Of course they should refuse.

growinggreyer · 13/05/2020 15:47

The whole point of donating to charity in Canada is for the tax break. Why would he want to make an anonymous donation? He actually wants to reduce his income tax using the charity, plus he wants to use the charity's good works to launder his own reputation.

oldshoeuk · 13/05/2020 15:59

The charity would have been buried by an avalanche of bad press if they had been caught accepting it. They really had little option.

JoJothesquirrel · 13/05/2020 16:00

Money buys you access as well. Not directly anymore in the post Jimmy Saville world (as much) but the more he sticks his name beside children’s charities the more readily people accept him being a good person to be best children. Not just this guy obviously, but you can quickly see why the charity don’t want to be in any way responsible when charity works and donations at best make someone seem like a better person and at worst are used as access to vulnerable children.

lubeybooby · 13/05/2020 16:02

They would likely lose more donors by accepting his publicity stunt, trying to undo the damage of his child sex offences

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/05/2020 16:03

But since scoring an early prison release in April because of the pandemic, his racketeering and firearms charges might not be the only things on the "Gooba" rapper's track record that fails to align with No Kid Hungry's mission and values. In March 2015, the then-18-year-old rapper pleaded guilty to three felony counts for use of a 13-year-old girl in a sexual performance after an inappropriate video from October 2015 surfaced online. He later breached his plea deal when he was arrested for misdemeanor assault in March 2018 after allegedly choking a 16-year-old boy in a Houston mall earlier that year in January.

And this will be great publicity for the charity.

Dyrne · 13/05/2020 16:08

Agree with others - this isn’t just a case of someone looking down at a Rap Star; this is a children’s charity not accepting money from a man convicted of a string of violent offences, not least child sex offences.

It’s not good to have a policy of accepting donations regardless of where they come from. They can actually do more harm than good - there is a very long list of bad people using charity donations to whitewash their crimes; and even worse, gain access to vulnerable people.

Charities have a duty to protect themselves and their service users from such individuals.

Sandybval · 13/05/2020 16:10

Others would likely choose other charities to donate to if they associated with him, so it evens out. I think they did the right thing tbh.

Lordfrontpaw · 13/05/2020 16:11

I suspect some people publicly donate as a or stunt or as part of a reputation rehabilitation.

It must sting though when the charities feel the need to turn down £££.

Tink1990 · 13/05/2020 16:13

I think they did the right thing too tbh.
