Morning all.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/05/2020 07:38

Morning all, hope we are doing OK.

I've had some good news - I bought my first house back in January but have been unable to move due to everything going on. Got word yesterday that everything is moving forward again and I should be moving in at the end of June. Can't bloody wait!

Looking sunny out there today, looking forward to getting out for a long walk later.

Orangeblossom78 · 15/05/2020 07:42

Morning!

Yes it was the Guardian mentioned for falsely reporting Sweden as 'business as normal' and biased reporting I remember. I find the Independant or "i" newspaper really good (and cheap!) it seems pretty balanced and not as doomy.

Yes not as easy as 'wait and see' I agree, I know the tutor meant try not to listen to too much speculation on the schools or 'doom' stories though until we know what the MAT are going to do. (he's my son's form tutor at secondary and waiting to hear himself.)

DH has gone from total denial of the situation (lockdown, not the virus) to being really fed up and angry. Really pissed off with all the dementing and just went out saying "If I'm not back it is because I've killed someone out running" Grin

We had the fish and chips which arrived in cute little cardboard boxes last night which was good though.

MinnieMountain · 15/05/2020 07:46

The rest of my household was clapping last night Blush Even DH who is otherwise very anti-dementor.

I had a lovely lunch by the river yesterday. It's on the edge of a park which was very busy.

rosettesforjill · 15/05/2020 07:50

I've let them get to me today... just had a normally very cheerful person wondering if the future of schools is online learning until there is a vaccine. That will basically mean my five year old would learn nothing... it took me three hours to get him to complete a 15 minute online lesson the day before yesterday 🙄

In other news, what is the going murder rate for tuning someone's violin for them? It was my bad deed for yesterday.

Orangeblossom78 · 15/05/2020 07:57

Ah just ignore them rosettes. my aim for the day is to not let them get to me.

Also i read a very positive article with the people working on the vaccine saying it might even be ready for September. a positive thought. Not saying everything needs to stop till then, but just mentioning.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 15/05/2020 08:02

@BrightYellowDaffodil I was going to post the same thing about the Guardian. Every day its doom and gloom and hysterical scaremongering. I've cancelled my subscription now.

rosettesforjill · 15/05/2020 08:02

That's positive news orangeblossom. I have been pretty optimistic about the vaccine despite a lot of bad news as it feels like many of the researchers seem quite confident that it's possible. Although I guess they wouldn't risk funding by saying otherwise!

Orangeblossom78 · 15/05/2020 08:08

In the news today Boris says 'don't be a fatty in your 50s' and stuff about how over a quarter very ill have diabetes. Boris is trying to lose weight and encouraging people to do the same. Going on about cycling to work. More on personal responsibility I guess. He's right though in a way. We can't ignore the underlying health issues here.

Dementors hate hearing about underlying health conditions.

Orangeblossom78 · 15/05/2020 08:09

I have a free online subscription to the Times, quite like it.

Pleasedontdothat · 15/05/2020 08:12

I’ve been cheered up this morning by reading (in the Telegraph 😳) that the virus transmission rate in London is now so low that there are currently only 24 new infections a day and that’s halving every three days. Which makes all the mask wearers and people hiding in bushes as I go past with my dog look even sillier... plus I also saw that police are asking people not to step into the road to avoid oncoming pedestrians as ‘you can’t get the virus by momentarily passing someone in the street’

I’m keeping my fingers tightly crossed for an outbreak of common sense...

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 15/05/2020 08:14

Stolen this from another thread- the delightful chris witty saying corona is NOT as deadly as everyone thinks and most people are fine:

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 15/05/2020 08:14

I love Chris Witty btw

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/05/2020 08:16

Chris Witty and Karol Sikora are my voices of reason throughout this!

MinnieMountain · 15/05/2020 08:18

That's great news @Waxonwaxoff0.

My employers (conveyancers) are gradually moving us all off furlough.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/05/2020 08:19

Just read a new tweet from Prof. Sikora -

"We are more in control of this virus than many think. It's sad to see people paralysed with fear and so negative about the future. We'll adapt, we always do. Keep your head up, things already feel a lot more normal - if we're all sensible, it will continue to improve."

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 15/05/2020 08:21

Its like balm to my soul reading that. Finally a sensible measured response

rookiemere · 15/05/2020 08:23

Orangeblossom78 I do wish it was possible to get stats on obesity like you can for the other underlying conditions. The fact it's being talked about a lot suggests a high correlation, and unlike other pre-existing conditions it's something that people can take some action on. Although if Boris is like me, he may find the weight he lost during illness comes back pretty quickly with a few extra pounds Blush.

Love this thread. Have had to sit on my hands as FB friend in England has said he's not sending his DCs into school until at least September for a LIFE OR DEATH LOTTERY . This guy used to work for me - pulling out monthly statistical analysis, but appears not to have read any of the actual Covid-19 stats. I mean he's entitled to his view and all, but then he's urging other DPs not to send their DCs back either.

Arcadia · 15/05/2020 08:26

Wow @Waxonwaxoff0 just looked at hisTwitter feed - his predictions were weirdly accurate!
My DH works in NHS and they are all starting this get antibody testing (good for us as I'm hoping we had it in Feb) as are neighbours who also work for NHS. It should then get rolled out across keyworkers etc (my primary school friend thinks she had it in march) and it will all get easier.
Life already feels more normal. I'm a Solicitor and new work is still coming in.

Orangeblossom78 · 15/05/2020 08:27

There are some stats on obesity in ICU I think, seems it is very fat though as in morbidly obese rather than just overweight...Boris's BMI was 36 it said but he has lost a stone since getting ill. very high obesity is considered clinically 'vulnerable' for shielding also

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 15/05/2020 08:28

There are a few threads about how London is down to only 24 cases a day. This might indicate herd immunity since London is so densely populated. I notice hardly anyone posts on those threads- its like NOONE wants to acknowledge we might be winning this battle. WTF is wrong with people that they almost want this to continue? are they really so twisted that they are dare I say it, enjoying this?

urgh

Orangeblossom78 · 15/05/2020 08:29

I just had the thought that as DS is in yr 6, hopefully going back 1 June that means just one more week of home schooling as the week after next would be half term. Then the 1st. Breaking to down like that gives me a bit of hope.

Then would just have the teen lurking about

Orangeblossom78 · 15/05/2020 08:31

Yes we have hardly any cases in Bath either Alexis, the only deaths (sadly) in case homes outside the city..hospital empty.

Overall things are positive with the flattening the curve aren't they.

NothingIsWrong · 15/05/2020 08:31

The obesity link is what prompted me to take a good hard look at myself. I've lost a stone in lockdown so far. 2 more to go... but I I'm now merely overweight as opposed to obese and hoping to maintain this to protect myself.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 15/05/2020 08:31

@orangeblosson78

I also have a year 6 and a teen!

Am lol at "would just have the teen lurking about" 😆
