Anyone planning to go to the garden centre?

I’m desperate to go, want to go on my lunch break today to stock up and spend the weekend gardening.

DH reckons the queue will be miles long! I think people are still worried to go out.

What does everyone think?

Well we went to b and q yesterday to go to their garden centre bit and there was no queue and it was lovely! Bit of normality.

BiteyShark · 13/05/2020 09:22

I am waiting a few weeks as I anticipate long queues as everyone rushes out to them.

jomaIone · 13/05/2020 09:27

I don't understand the big deal about garden centres opening. They have been delivering round us for weeks.

When I went to Asda the other day, B&Q were queueing round the carpark. Nae danger.

I'm considering a trip on Friday for bedding plants. I don't mind queuing, but think think Friday maybe quieter than Saturday.

EvilPea · 13/05/2020 09:35

I have seen the openings on social media and on the news.
I have actually had a little cry at them opening.

I was so worried about garden centres, the investment in plants and nurseries was there already. They had nurtured them, paid staff to care, paid for electric to heat them.

The horticulture industry is responsible for 24.2 billion GDP and 1.6% of all jobs.
So it’s a big deal.

BiteyShark · 13/05/2020 09:38

The garden centres around here have been closed with little or no delivery service. B&Q are miles away so the opening of garden centres is a welcome sight.

Ellieclare · 13/05/2020 09:39

I absolutely can’t wait to go but will avoid the first day as the queue is bound to be half way round the town! Will probably wait until Friday.

ineedaholidaynow · 13/05/2020 09:44

I am waiting for the queues to die down. We have a lovely small garden centre near us who has been doing deliveries but it has just been the owner working so I think they have struggled with demand.

I am also waiting for the nights to get warmer, still a risk of frost here.

BiddyPop · 13/05/2020 09:52

Our local GC is not open to the public, but has been doing online orders for (local) delivery or "click and collect" by social distancing means (they phone you when your order is ready, you drive there, they open the boot and put the order in the boot and you drive away - no physical contact) for some weeks now. That is working reasonably well.

I think they will be mobbed when they reopen their doors physically.

Meruem · 13/05/2020 09:54

We’re going to go one weekday next week. I think all the rest of this week, they will have major queues.

AdobeWanKenobi · 13/05/2020 10:25

And thats why it's not a big deal to you.
For people who's local garden centres haven't been delivering they might just be a lot more excited.

SlothMama · 13/05/2020 10:36

Nope I'm giving it a miss for the next few weeks

Sparklingbrook · 13/05/2020 10:37

No. The garden isn’t priority at the moment.

Clemmieandareallybigbunfight · 13/05/2020 10:40

Hell yes!

mencken · 13/05/2020 10:52

great to be able to support business. But not today. (as we say to the god of death...)

please try for click and collect if you can.

TheGreatWave · 13/05/2020 11:03

Will be at some point, not just yet.

bigbluebus · 13/05/2020 11:26

I won't be going this week although I'd love to go. Our local family run garden centre has been doing deliveries for the last few weeks and has been very busy - although that won't be the same volume as the store would have served. We have had frost here for the last few nights so I'm not rushing to get my baskets and bedding plants in just yet. I'm sure there'll be plenty of plants available next week.

moveandmove · 13/05/2020 11:28

I've never been to a garden centre in my life.

LaurieFairyCake · 13/05/2020 11:35

Yes, I might go later. I had some plants delivered yesterday but I need some compost.

And always more plants. Gardening is the only normal for me at the moment.

Cyclewidow46 · 13/05/2020 11:49

I went to our local garden centre this morning as wanted to get some bedding plants and compost for my mum to keep her occupied as she loves gardening and is getting bored of crosswords.

There was no queue (although I did get there at 9.30), the trolley handle was cleaned for me and social distancing was easy (lots of arrows/ lines on floor etc).

If there was a long queue I had decided I wasn't going to bother but it ended up to be a pleasant 45 minutes and a brief return to (almost) normality!

sunflowery · 14/05/2020 09:51

Update! I went, it was really quiet so no queue. But there were ropes set up for when a queue is necessary, staff in face masks, hand sanitising stations and one way arrows on the floor so they are obviously really prepared.

Spent a bloody fortune but it was soo nice to get out and feel a bit normal.

No chance. People touch to much stuff, sit on outside furniture etc. It’s too dangerous.

BabyofMine · 14/05/2020 22:15

I love my garden centres, a lot. Itching to go! But I have to say the ones I go to are like places people go for an outing, like with a cafe / restaurant and all sorts of different sections. And if truth be told a lot of the clientele are old people. So I kind of worry, what if I’m one of those asymptomatic carriers of Covid-19, and I inadvertently passed it on to loads of old people? So I’m not sure I could bring myself to go at the moment. (I know there might not be many old people going at the moment but I don’t want to risk finding out there are lots).

Geraniumblue · 14/05/2020 22:21

I’ve been! No queue and not many people there. It felt like a huge treat and the social distancing was fine. The till staff had some PPE and screens as well. I bought some houseplants.

underneaththeash · 14/05/2020 22:22

I went today - there were no dill seeds and I was very disappointed.
