I’ll begin by saying I know absolutely nothing about plants/gardening.

DH and I decided to buy some bedding plants and attempt to pot some. I did it with the kids and they looked lovely. In the last week, they have begun to bloom a little. The kids have loved checking them each morning.

Anyway, yesterday DH cut the grass and hoses down our patio and took absolutely no care when hosing around the plants and now some of these flowers look dead to me.

What do i do now? Will they recover? Sad

They look a bit waterlogged to me - have you got drainage holes? The flowers are busy lizzie or impatiens (two different names for the same plant). Then at the back you've got ivy and I think cosmos. If you pick the dead flowers off, the plants should recover and go on flowering, but you def want to watch not soaking them too much and they need to have some kind of drainage or the roots will sit in wet soil and that'll kill the whole plant.
Welcome to gardening, OP! There's a gardening board by the way with threads for new gardeners - and loads of enthusiastic veterans who love giving advice! Smile

You've got a verbena in there too.

And I think lobelia in pot three.

We had a bit of frost the other day which can cause damage to bedding plants. In my garden nothings dead till it's brown and crispy so maybe follow advice as above and keep fingers crossed

Thank you for all the advice. There are drainage holes yes. My dad told me to put a layer of stones in the bottom of the pots and then fill with the compost and pop the plants in which is what I’ve done. Is that okay?

Also, is there a certain technique I should use for picking off the dead bits?

Thanks Smile

Are there some begonias in there?? I reckon squeakys right about the frost / cold snap we're currently in. If you've a garage you could put them in for a couple of days till it warms up. Remove any dead leaves. They'll be fine.

Your dad's instructions are perfect. Pick dead bits off - gently! No special technique. Finger pinch or scissors will do the job. Yeah could have been frost - didn't think of that cos we've not had any. If it's very cold where you are putting them in shelter until it warms up is a great idea.
