Do I need a face mask for asda?

NCTDN · 13/05/2020 07:45

I'm going later today. Is asda a shop where they recommend? Guidelines are so vague and it says 'some shops'. I have no cough or cold and am not caring for anyone.

Yes. Face coverings for anywhere indoors and where 2m distance cannot be maintained. It's been recommended for a while now here in Scotland.

More and more people are now listening to the advise though there are still idiots without gloves and masks who don't know what 2m/6ft is and will handle everything on the shelves and like to have a good catch up in the aisles.

mencken · 13/05/2020 12:21

I haven't been wearing one for shopping but now there is advice on how to use a home made fabric one, I will be. Assuming I can make it before my next trip!

means going to contacts rather than specs but I think adding the mask is lower risk, will just hope I don't get lens trouble. I'm also keeping my distance, turning my back on anyone who comes too close, bagging up in the car park not at the packing bench and so on.

and yes - don't touch anything unless you are buying and do your chatting on the phone.

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 13/05/2020 12:27

I've been wearing one into supermarkets since the lockdown. There's not point having a lockdown if you regularly create a risk that's easily reduced.

It's a mouth/nose covering used for a specific purpose, for a short time with an important function. I'll probably get into the habit of using one long-term. I've enjoyed the past few months of not having regular coughs and colds.

I would wear one anywhere where large numbers of people have been in a confined space, so yes absolutely in any kind of shop or supermarket.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 13/05/2020 12:33

You don’t have to.

There is some advice too but it is NOT law

Doesn’t have to be a mask, just a face covering so you wrap w scarf round your mouth & nose and wash it once your home

Not many wear them in the supermarkets here and the ones that do pull them down for a cigarette so defeats the purpose anyway

binkyboinky · 13/05/2020 12:52

Yes, you should.

LilacTree1 · 13/05/2020 12:58

“ The problem i see with them is that people think the mask makes them invincible; the mask goes on and social distancing goes out the window.”

Because a mask catches droplets. So the need for social distancing does become irrelevant.

PurpleDaisies · 13/05/2020 13:01

Because a mask catches droplets. So the need for social distancing does become irrelevant.

This is absolutely incorrect.

From the CDC...

It is critical to emphasize that maintaining 6-feet social distancing remains important to slowing the spread of the virus.

megletthesecond · 13/05/2020 13:19

I wear a mask to collect my shopping outside and still make sure I maintain a 2m distance from the supermarket staff.

LilacTree1 · 13/05/2020 16:05

So why do some countries say 1m?

PurpleDaisies · 13/05/2020 16:10

@lilactree1 because that’s what the WHO recommends.

Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and others.

JemimaPuddleCat · 13/05/2020 16:12

I'm in Scotland so we've been recommended to for a couple of weeks I think.
I wore a (homemade) mask for the first time today in Morrisons. I saw one other person with a mask, and one young woman with a scarf pulled up. Most people don't bother, staff don't wear anything either. Seems I am happy to do my bit to help protect others, but others aren't bothered about protecting me.

LilacTree1 · 13/05/2020 16:19

Purple

I know the WHO make no sense

Here is their other advice re wearing masks

Probably different bits of the website say different things

Likethebattle · 13/05/2020 17:12

@2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney you can use the steam shot from your iron to sterilise them.

What I wonder is will I need 2 to travel to and from work, one for the inbound journey and a clean one for outbound?

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 13/05/2020 17:48

Like the battle
If you are wearing one at all yes I would have at least 3 . One for the journey to and one for the journey back. At least one extra for unexpected encounters during the day. More if your journey is long . AndKeep them in identifiable Plastic bags before use and transfer to "dirty bag" when used. Then straight into the washing machine. Then wash hands thoroughly.

dementedma · 13/05/2020 17:51

I wore one is Asda today. Most people werent wearing them.

Pipandmum · 13/05/2020 17:58

I wore a mask in the petrol shop of tesco asviys small, but I wouldn't necessarily in the big Tesco as it's a warehouse.
And no @2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney it's definitely not 'instead of'. It's because it's an enclosed space and it's sometimes not possible to remain 2m apart in small shops. How many times does the government have to say to keep your distance? That message has not changed at all.

Katinski · 13/05/2020 18:16

In my local Asda, NO. LIDLE and ALDI, of course you shouldWinkGrin

MinkowskisButterfly · 13/05/2020 19:07

I think it should be compulsory on public transport or whilst shopping.

@Givenupno do you have a reputable link for that info? As what you are saying contradicts the advice to avoid touching your face - which is what you would be doing whilst upping and downing a face covering even if it is only in asda and it's only a scarf.

WanderingMilly · 13/05/2020 19:17

I've been wearing a mask or scarf for a long time now, but they are not mandatory you don't have to. they are recommended for some places (eg. public transport) but you can choose.

Personally I wouldn't not wear one, I juts feel I am doing my bit to make it safer for others and if everyone wore one it would be safer for me too.

I also wear gloves every single time I go out. I'm amazed at how many people don't, they are in the supermarket picking stuff up, handling the trolley and so on...but it's still their choice.

WanderingMilly · 13/05/2020 19:17

** just, not juts....

dementedpixie · 13/05/2020 19:34

Gloves are a bit pointless as they will carry the virus just the same as your hands would

NCTDN · 15/05/2020 14:49

Gloves are not for supermarket shopping.

MWestie · 15/05/2020 15:51

I tried to wear a homemade mask going to the supermarket yesterday following recent guidelines, but had to take it off as I couldn't see a thing with my glasses fogging up.

I'd checked this before I went, washed them in soapy water etc to try and minimise but it was just impossible to see. Not sure what I'm doing wrong but will persevere.

I think more people were wearing masks there but unfortunately many seemed to think that made them invincible...social distancing was definitely worse than it has been to date.

mencken · 15/05/2020 16:22

that poster regarding use of gloves is of course correct, but I like to think I am not that stupid. Gloves go on after parking, leaving and closing car, do shopping, remove one glove to open car, put shopping in car, remove gloves to close car. Wipe car door handles, steering wheel and stalks with anti bac wipes and then drive. Don't touch phone throughout, obviously. And chuck gloves in footwell with trolley token, to sit there for a week. Credit card also gets wiped down. What a performance.

not ideal but with no glove supply, best I can do. Supermarket also provides spray and paper towels for trolley which I use.

and yes, masks and glasses are pretty incompatible unless the mask fits really tightly on your nose, which a home made one won't. I'm going to have to chance contact lenses.
