Flu jabs

Do you normally have a flu jab? Are you high risk? Will you have one this year? Just wondering if the government should be making them free for all to reduce strain on the NHS over something they have more control over...

OP posts:

They are free for the "at risk group"

jimmyjo · 12/05/2020 18:20

You can also pay for one your self at Boots or Superdrug , less than £10

Pelleas · 12/05/2020 18:23

Our workplace arranges them privately (free of charge to employees). If you work for a large employer it might be worth suggesting it - the idea is that the cost to the employer is offset by avoiding lost productivity due to flu.

No

jadey0891 · 12/05/2020 18:26

And no for my children. Makes them ill anyway

LST · 12/05/2020 18:29

I have the flu jab every year. I get it free because of medications I am on. Both my children have it at school as well. We're all up to date this year.

Twospaniels · 12/05/2020 18:30

I’ve had one every year for the last 10 yrs as I work for the NHS. I’ve never had any adverse reaction to it and will continue to have it.

HenSolo · 12/05/2020 18:31

My whole family have had it yearly since my ds nearly died of swine flu a couple of years ago. I would encourage it

whenwillthemadnessend · 12/05/2020 18:33

I have one and I pay for my kids teens to have one too. Well worth it.

Kittywampus · 12/05/2020 18:46

I get it due to a medical condition, the children get it due to their age and dp gets it through work. We will continue to do so.

ChestyNut · 12/05/2020 19:00

Yes every year. NHS employed and high risk.

PixellatedPixie · 12/05/2020 19:02

I’ve had one every year since I was first pregnant and have never had any adverse effects and have not had flu since then. I will definitely get it for me and my kids and I always tell my husband to go for his shot too. Work gives them a free one.

ChickenMidwife · 12/05/2020 19:04

I’ve had one every year for the last 7 years or so. I’m asthmatic and work for the NHS. I’ve not had flu.

Thethingswedoforlove · 12/05/2020 19:06

Whenwillthemadnessend where do you go to get your Teens vaccinated? I have never ever found anywhere prepared to do it as mine are under 16.

dementedpixie · 12/05/2020 19:08

I think some superdrug pharmacies do younger children

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 12/05/2020 19:09

I have one on the NHS, one of the dc gets it at school and DH pays. I'd get the teen done if I knew where would do it.

Whataloadofshite · 12/05/2020 19:16

Yes on all three counts.

ALongHardWinter · 12/05/2020 19:20

I've had one every year at my GPs for the last 25 years as I'm considered 'at risk'. I've never missed a year and in all that time I've only once had what I would call 'the flu',but it was very mild compared to what full-blown flu is like,i.e. I was only ill for about 4 days and didn't knock me for six for weeks afterwards, like it has when I've had 'proper flu'.

chipshopElvis · 12/05/2020 20:47

I get one at work now but paid to have it at Boots previously, kids get it at school. We visit my elderly grandmother is our usual reason but this year I don't want us ill either.

BlackAndWhiteCat01 · 12/05/2020 20:57

I didn’t get mine last year after ordering them for the whole office . Kept putting it off. I’ll do it tomorrow all that shit.
Ended up in hospital with severe flu, and took weeks to recover. If I hadn’t had a positive flu test I would have been convinced it was C-19 looking back.

I will never ever miss another flu jab again.

AuntieStella · 12/05/2020 20:59

Yes, I buy one for me and my teen DC (who are too old for the school-based programme). DH gets one from his employer

Crunchymum · 12/05/2020 21:06

Have had 3 winter pregnancies so had the jab then. I'm now on a medication to suppress my immune system, so I get one because of that. The kids get the nasal spray

Interestingly my GP didn't have enough stock to give me one this winter, but my lovely pharmacist (Superdrug) recognised I was entitled to one, knew the surgery I come from was low I stock, so gave me one FOC (I'd have paid but at that point I wasn't sure my surgery was never going to see me!!)

Ghostlyglow · 12/05/2020 21:16

I work for NHS so I get one for free. I'm always a bit shocked by the amount of people at my workplace who don't have one - I realise some get them for free from their GP, I mean the ones who "don't believe in it" or similar.

whenwillthemadnessend · 12/05/2020 21:20

Thethingswedoforlove

A local travel vaccine clinic does them for £15 each. Though I believe some pharmacy's will do it over 13 yo

Try google private travel vaccine.

HoldMyLobster · 12/05/2020 21:24

I'm in the US where everyone is offered one. Everyone in my household gets one every year - sometimes through school, sometimes GP, sometimes just the local pharmacy.

This year they'll be especially important with Covid about - some colleges here have already said they will be requiring all students to have them, to ease the pressure on their health systems, and also so that they don't have people quarantining unnecessarily.
