Infected wisdom teeth

Yes teeth, plural.

Both my bottom ones. I get an infection like this every few years.

Going to plead with my Dr to give me some AB tomorrow [not had AB for years so I hope they won't object] but what can I do tonight?

Diclofenic helps but I've had my full amount of it now.

Can't eat, can talk, can barely open my mouth. No abscesses (yet!)

@Namechangervaver it’s so good not to worry about it isn’t it? The extraction wasn’t nice but I told myself a few awful days and some difficult weeks and its’ll be worth it. It has been worth the stitches, the pain, the sickness (from the sedation) and ibuprofen when I hadn’t eaten much (1 hour to eat a yoghurt on day 1). I even got an infection but would do it again to stop pericoronitis. The sedation is lovely and if I could get access to it I would be addicted.

That’s terrible what you’ve had to go through just to get treatment. I’ve just had pericoronitis. I was in agony. Called Dentist Monday morning, spoke to receptionist and she said the dentist would call. 5 minutes later spoke to dentist and he prescribed antibiotics, he sent the prescription to my local pharmacy, 20 minutes later I had the tablets. Must’ve been awful having to go through all that wait, you should complain (and get a new dentist)

Nat6999 · 16/05/2020 02:43

Once you have your prescription it might be worth looking at online pharmacies to buy another set of the antibiotics to keep in stock for if the pain starts again once you have finished this course.

Thanks all.

Feeling a bit more human now but still upset that it took over 48h to access the medication I needed (I could have prevented an extra 2 days of utter agony). So I am going to send an email to the practice manager, to ask them to consider / review their current protocol.

I hope I'm just someone who fell through the cracks and that most people have easier access to what they need!!

Will be changing dentists as soon as I can and I will look into removal as well.

Your dental practice is bizarre. Is it an actual dental practice? Not an access centre or anything. Ive never met a practice you cant book appointments at.

If its pericoronitis, which is when the gum overlying a partially erupted wisdom tooth gets inflamed then you need to clean out around the gum. Use a syringe (can buy them from a pharmacy) fill it with corsodyl or salt water and squirt around and under the gum. You can then use the syringe morning and night to remove plaque/food build up. That should stop it coming back.

If theres no swelling antibiotics arent actually indicated and it normally just needs a really good clean.

But if this is happening regularly when dentists are reopen ask about a referral to have them removed.

Crunchymum · 16/05/2020 22:02

@UncleFoster

It is an actual surgery. And yes very bizarre.

Emergencies (even if you are a patient) and check-ups are walk-in. Plus they take non patient emergencies as walk-ins too. Any additional work is done by appointment.

I registered my kids elsewhere but never got round to moving with them. That is first job on the post lockdown list.

I'd been doing all the self care (including syringes, have loads as the toddler was tube fed first year!!) and yes it is Pericoronitis - this is what was recorded last time I needed AB 4 years ago but I've had a few flares since I've managed to control at home. Maybe once a year it flares.

Thats really strange! Emergencies I can see the logic, but check ups thats not really good enough.

Sounds like you are doing the right things. Its definitely worth having them out in the long run, its not urgent as the antibiotics and good cleaning should get the pericoronitis under control but you dont want this to keep happening.
