Leftover cheap and nasty whisky... what to do with it?

Just that. We're moving house again soon. Last time (2 years ago), we had 2 full boxes of spirits which DH had accumulated, largely before I moved in with him. They are not moving with us again!

Neither of us normally drinks spirits, but, for the greater good, I have so far disposed of the vodka and the Bacardi. Am getting the hang of dark and stormy for rum, and port and lemon is surprisingly nice.

Nothing can persuade me that the hangover I get from whisky is worth having, especially not for grouse. I don't mind it in the very occasional savoury dish but we do have 3 nearly full (but sadly open) bottles.

Any thoughts on disposal please? Seems a shame to just scop them down the drain (unless they're renowned for that...?!)

Cranachan is delish.

MrsJackRackham · 12/05/2020 16:37

No Scotch whisky is cheap and nasty, some are just better than others.
Blended Scotch and ginger ale with a slice of lime is nice. Or use it in a whisky and mushroom cream sauce with a steak. Or liven up a peppercorn sauce.

Could you freeze some of it in ice-cubes for future use or would that do something awful to the alcohol?

Sink

Gaelic coffee.

Save it for the Christmas cake

DartmoorChef · 12/05/2020 16:56

Fudge

Goldrill · 12/05/2020 16:58

Mmm. I do like Gaelic coffee, but not enough to be bothered to make it. And it would have to be decaff unless it was for breakfast.

I'm really after something that doesn't involve me consuming it! We have another couple of bottles which are unopened so can go for the next raffle or similar. And several single malts dh is refusing to let me bin.

Ooh. Fudge. I could give it away. Might be a huge amount of sweets to use it up tho.

Even though the bottles are opened, whisky won't go off. Give it away to someone who will appreciate it.

PickAChew · 12/05/2020 17:02

I'd clean the sink with the grouse and drink the single malts, instead.

Goldrill · 12/05/2020 17:02

Magnolia, I genuinely don't have anyone to give it to. It appears most of my friends and extended family are whisky snobs.

Any mumsnetters in north Cumbria want it left on their doorstep...?

We have a community kindness page, people are often giving away open bottles of spirits.

Goldrill · 12/05/2020 17:05

Mydog - cool! I will investigate!

Whisky marmalade?

My Mum used to make marmalade muffins that I'm sure had a whisky & sugar glaze poured over top before serving.

Flambe everything?

jackparlabane · 12/05/2020 17:07

Hot toddy! Helps horrible colds no end, and it's worth using a reasonable one.

Try offering round local WhatsApp group in exchange for a donation to charity?

CockCarousel · 12/05/2020 17:07

Keep it for cooking.

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 12/05/2020 17:08

A slug of cheap whisky in hot honey and lemon is very cheering when you have a cold. Unless you’re a reception teacher and get colds all the time it’ll take a while to polish off three bottles though.

Goldrill · 12/05/2020 17:11

I've kept the calvados and the brandy for setting fire to pancakes. I can't believe he has this huge stash when we get through a few tins of beer and a bottle of wine most weeks. Just looking at a mojito is enough to give him a hangover these days.

I know just what you mean. We've moved 3 times , including countries with bottles of whisky neither of us drinks . We've given all the sealed ones away as various prizes. I think we're in our forever home now so the part bottles will sit with the obscure liquors for somebody else to dispose of.

Make tea bread but soak your raisins in whisky instead of tea.

madroid · 12/05/2020 18:19

You can make a really delicious fruit cake by soaking the dried fruit in the whisky for 2-3 days before baking.

Most of the alcohol cooks off but leaves a lovely flavour.

weebarra · 12/05/2020 18:23

Nick Nairn's whisky sauce for steak! DH gets bottles from clients and that's what we use the not great stuff for!

BikeRunSki · 12/05/2020 18:27

And several single malts dh is refusing to let me bin. I don’t blame him!!
