We have £300,000,.to buy a property outright ...but we need five bedrooms ,as adult children still live at home ,(and 2 with SEN will never leave home )
This whole virus has made us think life is to short to be squashed in to a to small house ,in an expensive area.
But ..no idea where to start looking .
We would consider anywhere ,..we love the sea ..we were thinking wales .any ideas?

York is lovely and Harrogate.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 12/05/2020 09:12

west kilbride might be worth a look? I have just had a quick look at onthemarket.com but there is one 5 bed property here under budget (and there are probably others on other websites). You are near the sea and have leisure facilities, restaurants etc, and are 20 min drive from Irvine if you wanted to go to a larger town.

Chocolateandcarbs · 12/05/2020 09:15

Shropshire, Herefordshire and Powys!

chunkyrun · 12/05/2020 09:15

Ribble valley x

Chipsahoy · 12/05/2020 09:16

Lincolnshire, wales, particularly the more rural parts. North Wales is fairly cheap.
We are also looking to relocate after all this. Nearer to the sea. We have a similar budget but need less rooms and the areas above are where I've been looking. I've also seen some affordable. houses in stroud too.
Yorkshire is affordable but not for us, we need to be in a 2.5hr train journey of London.

nowaitaminute · 12/05/2020 09:18

Carlisle, Cumbria!!

Kickanxietyinthebeanbag · 12/05/2020 09:20

we live on the edge of the peak district, it is a life saver in the current crisis with lots of outdoor space. The schools are all good or outstanding. and there are lots of local facilities and it is only a 20-30 minute drive to major towns and cities. House priceas are reasonable too, 3 bed semi around £200K

nowaitaminute · 12/05/2020 09:39

Carlisle

  1. Lovely area, nice small city
  2. Close to the Lake District
  3. On the M1 so great links
  4. 15mins from Scotland
  5. House prices are great.
  6. Ppl- very friendly
7.private schools available if needed.
  1. Lots of outdoor green space even within the city.

OP asks for cheapest areas to live and the first response is York and Harrogate!

BettyUnderswoob · 12/05/2020 09:41

I second Lincolnshire and parts of Wales: rural, pleasant, cheap.

NinetySixer · 12/05/2020 09:42

You don’t mention what you do for Jobs OP?

Shropshire, Herefordshire and Powys are beautiful full of open country side, rolling hills and small market towns with vibrant arts and food scenes.

But, wages are lower and jobs more difficult to find.

SecondStarFromTheRight · 12/05/2020 09:45

Also interested in this. We are looking to move soon. Ideally we would like to stay close to family as that has been important recently for things like essential drops but we would be open to going anywhere we can afford if it's right.

Kickanxietyinthebeanbag · 12/05/2020 09:46

I thought Carlisle was rough ,would not of thought of looking there ,but I will ,I love the house ,sleepismysuperpower has linked. ,that would suit us perfectly

nowaitaminute · 12/05/2020 09:49

also I meant to say m6 in my previous list not M1 I don't know how I did that!

ItsMutinyontheBunty · 12/05/2020 09:59

I third Lincolnshire. You could get a lovely property in one of the villages North of Lincoln for that (check out Welton, Dunholme, Sudbrooke, Langworth and Nettleham). Good schools, Decent bus services into the city so you have village life but you’re not cut off from the city. Lincoln has a hospital too. You’re only an hour from Nottingham and Leicester for better shopping and gigs too (although since Lincoln uni has grown there’s better bands and stand ups coming to Lincoln).
This is an example of a 5 bed property on budget in Lincolnshire.

Zaphodsotherhead · 12/05/2020 10:03

York is very very pricey. All the available large houses get bought up for HMO student housing. Scarborough is quite cheap at the moment though.

Trouble is that most of the places up here that are cheap enough for you to afford a five bed house, aren't necessarily places that you'd want to live.

chunkyrun · 12/05/2020 10:03

Good schools
Lots of country side
Bigger surrounding towns/cities Preston, Blackburn, Lancaster

lastqueenofscotland · 12/05/2020 10:05

My friend grew up in Wetheral near Carlisle and it’s beautiful

I live in south Manchester and love it. Manchester is more expensive than most of the north but there are a couple of larger properties available in ok areas.
I love the access to art galleries, theatres, independent cinemas, excellent restaurants, the best craft beer scene in the U.K. if not maybe anywhere in Europe outside Belgium, then it’s a doable journey to some beautiful parts of the country. I work in the city centre and after work going for a run in the Peak District is viable in the summer.
The north lakes (Keswick etc) is only a two hour drive away so viable to do for a weekend.
Can get to leeds or Liverpool easily for a chance of scenery.
