Coccyx/Tailbone pain. Can anyone reassure me?

A few weeks ago, I randomly had a pain in my coccyx area when sitting down. The pain went but did occur again over the next few days. The pain started again this evening. It’s not very painful, more of a dull ache.

I am 31 and otherwise healthy but I do have a history of health anxiety. I can feel my mind beginning to spiral with this and wondered if anyone else here has experienced similar? I wouldn’t really want to go to the GP about this yet, particularly given the current situation. Thanks Smile

When I get a weird symptom that makes me worry I put a reminder in my phone calendar for two weeks in the future - something like ‘Tailbone pain, 2 weeks’. Then I find it’s easy to forget about because I know I’ll be reminded to check on it and I don’t need to monitor it.

If it’s still painful after two weeks it might merit a call to GP. Most likely scenario it was just one of those things and you’ll have forgotten about it.

I don’t know anything specifically about coccyx pain but I do get a lot of sacral area pain - I hurt it really badly with birth of first baby (ten years ago) and ever since I get pain around sacrum when I have my period, when I’m run down or ill, and various movements can set it off. Never bad enough to worry too much about though and have always assumed it’s just weirdly sensitive nowadays.

I would assume you’ve just niggled a muscle or nerve in that area somehow?

Mines been hurting for nearly a year, goes away sometimes but then comes back. It feels bruised if I sit sometimes and feels really sore if I touch it. I’m joining to see if anyone comes up with any reason!

@Callybrid thank you, I will give that a try ☺️

@Unravellingslowly Have you ever gone to the GP about it?

I’ve had that, but I have a raft of musculoskeletal problems thanks to my hyper mobility. Sitting on a cushion helps.

My sister suffers with this too. It came and went several times often for months at a time. It was checked out but they can’t do much only medicate for the pain given where it is. Hospital said once damaged it can take a long time to heal properly.

No, I haven’t seen GP. I have a long list of conditions I see the GP for, I hate having to see them about yet another ailment so ignore things for as long as possible.

I did google about bruised coccyx & it said pain could last a long time but I just can’t think of a time I could have bruised it.

Have you been sitting a lot more than usual or a hard chair?

I've had it and this was the cause.

OuzoWoozo · 12/05/2020 20:04

I started cycling a lot recently, and this caused what you are describing. I did cycle fairly often before but not as much as I do now. Turns out the seat on my bike needed adjusting. It is clearing now.

But before I figured the seat was the issue, I googled tailbone pain abd scared the living daylights out of myself. Do not Google.
