Nice areas in Gloucester

Hi, I'm just looking to move to Gloucester and was just wondering if there are any rough ares in Upton St Leonards? We've seen a house just on the outskirts towards Matson and we've heard Upton is lovely but to avoid Matson so just wanted some opinions really before we buy 😊

Hi I'm from Cheltenham!Longford is lovely!its not too far from the centre nor from the duel carriage way to Cheltenham xx

Meduse · 11/05/2020 20:54

Yes,Matson doesn’t have the best reputation...

topcat2014 · 11/05/2020 20:57

Churchdown?

Not really sure as am Cheltenham based

Purrmuda · 11/05/2020 21:02

Matson isn't ideal, Upton is nice. Longlevens is excellent and well placed with access to M5, walkable into Gloucester and on bus routes to Cheltenham. Be careful with Longford as it floods regularly.

I would avoid Gloucester, look at Hatherley/Benhall in Cheltenham. Upton St Leonards OK though. Secondary schools are much better in Cheltenham, although most of the grammars are in Gloucester, so it also depends on how old your kids are? If you have them.

Agreed on the Longlevens idea @Purrmuda ,by the greyhound pub always seems nice.
Hatherley and Benhall are good but if you have children and are considering schools Bishop's Cleeve is excellent, lovely village loads of amenities and lots of lovely primary schools and a brilliant secondary!

Upton st Leonard's is nice, however check the house is actually in the village as estate agents love to pretend houses are in Upton when they are actually in Matson or Abbeydale.
Abbeydale and Abbeymead are ok, Longlevens is nice, so are parts of Hucclecote. Hempstead village is nice too.
Outside Gloucester there are nice villages - Churchdown is a big village between Cheltenham and Gloucester it's nice but more expensive than Gloucester city (cheaper than Cheltenham though)
Lots of villages just North of Gloucester- Maisemore, Highnam, Hartpury and more villages further north - easy commute to Gloucester, Loads cheaper than villages nearer to Chelt but they do get cut off when the river floods!
People always suggest Cheltenham when anyone asks for Gloucester recommendations - which is fine if you have a big budget, but it's far far more expensive to buy there than anywhere in Gloucester. Bishops Cleeve is a bit cheaper but nightmare to commute to Gloucester from there.

Really depends where you're going to work - traffic is an absolute bitch. A40 between Chelt and Glos is a nightmare, M5 like any other motorway, A417 to Ciren/Swindon/Oxford just, well, add an hour to journey times. A46 between Stroud and Chelt not great either, especially around the Shurdington Leckhampton area.

I would heartily recommend living near where you want to work!

What's your budget? I echo Churchdown, Hucclecoat, but there are areas in Cheltenham that might be comparable cost wise? Fiddlers Green/ Wymans Brook etc...
