What is your favourite spirit to drink at home?

DarylDixonsHair · 11/05/2020 17:06

I've been a lifelong beer and wine drinker and never really drank spirits apart from in cocktails. The last few times I've had beer it has given me a horrible headache and I'm bored of wine.

Joe Wicks had a raspberry gin and rhubarb drink on his Instagram that looked interesting, but how would I recreate that at home? Is rhubarb juice a thing? Do they sell it in Lidl? Recommend me a drink to look forward to this weekend! 🥂

Southern comfort over ice (have one now!). Flavoured gins I like but mix them with lemonade as I can't stand tonic.

iklboo · 11/05/2020 18:54

I'm also rather partial to Dead Mans Fingers hemp rum and caffeine free coke. Very relaxing.

Brigante9 · 11/05/2020 20:32

Zubrowka on its own.
Plain vodka with star anise, ginger or cinnamon chucked in, no mixer, good if you want booze but not sweetness.
Plain gin-the flavoured ones are way too sweet, I find-with plain tonic, lots of cucumber slices or lemon, or both!
Bacardi Spiced rum, Diet Coke.

Malibu and pineapple juice is delicious, especially over ice. Can't really help you with gin, I only like very basic plain g&t. Can confirm that grapefruit tonic is rank though

They make rhubarb flavour gins and raspberry flavour ones too. They're my favourite ones.

I love Hendricks gin (Aldi do a fabulous dupe called Harrison's for £15). I mix that with elderflower cordial, soda water and sliced cucumber. It is lovely, sweet and refreshing.

Aldi also do an elderflower flavoured soda water instead of buying cordial and soda separately but it's a bit hit and miss as to whether they have it in.

What do you mix with flavoured gins? Just tonic water as normal?

Plain tonic for flavoured find, but it's aaaall about the garnish. I have a mandarin and grapefruit gin which I serve with a slice of pink grapefruit.

Oh God, my mouths watering reading this thread. I'm not keen on sweet fizzy drinks like coke or lemonade. Vodka lycee martini sounds very sophisticated.

Southern Comfort and coke with ice. Doesn't taste that alcoholic but very nice.

Gin & tonic or Pimm's in the warm weather. Whisky and ginger ale when it's colder.

I'm generally not a fan of flavoured gin but I do have a rather nice grapefruit one. I like Brockman's gin as well.

I recently discovered Fentiman's Rose Lemonade, which is delicious with gin, and not too fizzy.

Fentimans do really nice flavoured tonics. Pink Rhubarb and Clementine are nice. If you want something sweeter their Rose Lemonade is lovely

Golden Rum with Coke Zero and Ice 🤪
There are loads of different rums. The older they are the better, the more expensive they are the better. Amazon often has some good deals.

Gin. I make my own blackberry, bilberry and rhubarb. Loads of fruits in my freezer.

Gin and tonic, it's been my drink of choice for 28 years.

Specifically Bombay Sapphire, plain tonic and lime“

Bombay Sapphire was my choice too, until I tried Renegade. It’s gorgeous.

Chillipeanuts · 11/05/2020 20:35

I’ve done it again, seem to have pasted the whole thread. Sorry, not very good at this 😊

Was recommending Renegade gin.

zigzagbetty · 11/05/2020 20:43

I don't like gin but am very partial to a lockdown tie maria and coke Grin
Also randomly love Taboo and lemonade!

Prestonsouthend · 11/05/2020 20:43

Grey Goose vodka mixed with another Grey Goose.

Quarantimespringclean · 11/05/2020 21:04

I’m old school. Traditional Gin and slim line Schweppes tonic (or Tesco’s/Aldi own brand diet tonics are nice too). Garnish with a lemon twist with Gordon’s, cucumber with Hendricks or a strawberry with Bloom.
Bombay Sapphire doesn’t even taste of gin to me and the flavoured ones are all too sweet. And don’t get me started on the total vileness that is Fevertree.

I also love Jameson’s whiskey and the occasional glass of cognac.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 11/05/2020 21:05

Zubrowka and apple juice.

Khione · 11/05/2020 21:21

I prefer plain gin and flavoured tonics or getting the flavour from cordial and lemonade.

redeyetonowheregood · 11/05/2020 21:27

Single malt whisky for me mostly...or...I love to mix a Manhattan with rye or bourbon.

Crinkle77 · 11/05/2020 21:41

I like vodka cos any mixer will go with it.

myangelalex · 11/05/2020 21:42

Gordon's gin and full fat tonic

ParkheadParadise · 11/05/2020 21:45

Brandy and Diet Coke
Whisky, lemonade and ice
White wine

TheoneandObi · 11/05/2020 21:47

Gin and tonic (Mediterranean light is my fave), garnished with herbs from the garden. Thyme or lemon verbena or any variety of mint is good)

Katjolo · 11/05/2020 21:47

Dark rum, ginger beer and lime

dudsville · 11/05/2020 21:50

Whisky with homemade sour mix.

dudsville · 11/05/2020 21:52

For those not liking buying flavoured gins, I've never bought one but it is easy to make. I make damson gin, i control the sugar. It's beautiful.

dementedma · 11/05/2020 21:53

Gin and lime over ice. No tonic

123456abcd · 11/05/2020 21:59

Lidl Hortus gin (the normal one, not a fan of flavoured gin) with Fever Tree tonic. Also enjoy a whiskey (no mixer, no water, no ice), ideally Jamesons if if it's on offer!

Whisky with sparkling water or on a cold evening a Hot Toddy.
