Anyone made their own face mask?

I'm watching BBC news and wearing a face mask in shops, on public transport etc is being talked about a lot. Until now I haven't considered wearing a mask but now thinking I should have some in the house.

Has anyone made one? I've got white elastic and thought about cutting up old white T-shirts (then they can be thrown in a hot wash together) but would T-shirt material be suitable. I don't have a sewing machine so would need to be hand-sewn or wonder-webbed.

I make these ones - but more room in nose/mouth area than others and good fit.

Yes, I've made a few now from the pattern on Craft Passion with a pocket for a filter, but there are lots of instructions for no/minimal sew masks

They're not saying a mask they're saying a face covering, which means a scarf or a buff will do fine.

Sparklingbrook · 11/05/2020 15:39

I was thinking a scarf will do the job too.

Have a Google for no sew versions. I've made a few from socks, strips of fabric with scrunchies and t shirts.

The sock ones are easiest. The bandana and scrunchy ones feel best.

The t shirts ones are OK, but I won't be making any more.

Oh, all can be washed and dried quickly and are easy to carry round.

Thanks for the links, I'll take a look tonight and see what I can manage with my none existent sewing skills. DH and I will be fine with a scarf or buff although they may be a bit bulky as the weather gets warmer.

DS has sensory processing disorder so he's going to be the tricky one as he hates scarfs at the best of times! DD (9) would also find an elasticated mask easier than a scarf if she gets back to school this term.

@TheClitterati do you sell them? Can you pm me your shop details?

lifestooshort123 · 11/05/2020 22:07

This works for me using a bandana and scrunchies and a piece of kitchen roll inside.

The BBC news app has a guide to making your own face masks. Different versions, see/no sew, including one made from an old t-shirt.

TheClitterati · 12/05/2020 10:55

@huggy no I don't sell them. I just made a few for family & friends. Im a super busy single parent working full time and homeschooling 2 dc otherwise I'd be setting up a wee cottage industry.

People are selling homemade masks on Etsy ebay etc.
