Furlough scheme set to be extended to September (at reduced 60 percent rate)

www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2020/05/10/job-retention-scheme-set-extended-september/

An announcement is likely today or tomorrow.

Thoughts?

I think 60 percent is an impossible amount to live on. Not to mention not everyone can go back to work (i.e. no social distancing measures), (the business is still shut) A lot more people will still struggle month to month.

Knowing the Tories I wouldn't be surprised if month by month they reduce furlough from 60 to 40 then eventually getting rid of the scheme...

80 % till October.

We thought my husband would be entitled to nothing at all, so were getting our heads around that/making changes etc.
Then we discovered he’d get £394 SSP....which we thought was great! Then we discovered he could get furlough at 80%, which was amazing!
If furlough drops to 60%....personally, we’ll still be delighted & very, very grateful!

Because it’s better than the alternative we expected!!

Furlough is costing £8 billion per month
Extending it to October will mean £80 billion will have to be found by the taxpayers

It’s great news !

Oscarsdaddy, don't lose sight of the fact that bailing out the banking system in 2008 by one measure cost us £500 billion.

For the sake of saving people's jobs, homes, sanity and our economy, furlough seems like a drop in the ocean by comparison.

The people on benefits are probably amongst the few not affected by Covid 19
( have benefits been cut to 80%)so I agree with @CarolefeckinBaskin you can’t compare

And rightly so... if people are already existing on what the majority of people seem to think they could not manage on, why would you reduce this amount by 20%?

As a single parent with four children to support I lost my income from work overnight and am not entitled to furlough... so my sole source of income is now ‘benefits’. Mortgage holiday and freezing of council tax for 3 months has helped. As have free school meal vouchers. Which you can apply for if eligible. I wouldn’t say I am among the least affected by COVID-19. Fear of losing my house, losing my job, having not seen an adult since Mid-March, anxiety and depression, none of my usual coping strategies available. I have been very much affected, it has been the worst weeks of my life (am sure many others as well).

Firms are going to be asked to share the 80% furlough cost from August. Not sure what percentage of the furlough pay companies are going to be asked to provide, but obviously if it's too high it will lead to mass redundancies. Our company will not be back in business by August, so being asked to contribute towards furlough pay would seriously stretch last resources and could lead to redundancies anyway if the required contribution was too high.

We barely get enough to survive on benefits but I'll never be the one that wishes hardship on those that are furloughed, we had the narrative changed about us in 2012 and we became scroungers, those who are furloughed and thought at the time that we should be grateful to have the benefits we have well welcome to our life the narrative is changing against you so prepare yourselves for the hate coming your way

Lala241280 · 12/05/2020 19:06

@MrsMiss

I didn’t mean people like yourself who unfortunately have lost your job due to Covid and can’t claim furlough and are claiming benefits ( I have a sis in law in same position)

I Mean people who up to this make no attempt to get a job / look for one their benefits won’t be cut

I hope things look up for you soon

loubieloo4 I am so sorry. This is why none of us should really complain. Yes, it’s crap... but it could be worse. Is DH having to shield? I wonder if there are/could be exceptions for those who really are very poorly? We’ll see....

MrsMiss I’m in the same boat. Single parent & I miss adults & a focus now :(
I embraced it to begin with, we baked, made things, walked more & talked more, but I am desperate to get back to work now & my dc’s have had enough of me! I’d do anything, but I have nobody to look after my dc. Haven’t seen one adult since 20th March, except my mum... through a window.
People don’t choose to be on benefits. It’s not what anybody wants, even though the press would have us believe otherwise.
Ex hasn’t seen dc, he’s using this as an excuse - has no money etc etc (but has just purchased a new house & it’s bloody dreamy, so it’s adding to my frustration - hay ho). We live in the countryside & my girls are really missing friends. I am so down right now, like many others. We are lonely & fed up. I think the government should be looking at things on a more local level. Countryside schools could reopen easily. The schools here have lots of outdoor space & very small year groups... but that’s for another thread.
I arrange supported days trips. Our office is closed & I can’t see how we can get back to work anytime soon. I’m worried & just wish we could fast forward to next year! I’d love to have a job or be working from home, but most of all, I’d like this all to be over. I’m thankful for anything at the moment, but 60% will be £700 a month for me. Rent is £750 pcm. Ex has reduced cm from 400 per month to £100 because he can’t work atm. Still buying that £800,000 house though. I shall keep going. Fun times!
