Metformin side effects

Hi everyone don't know if anyone can shed some light for me ?
I started taking metformin 1000mg a day about 6 weeks ago. For pcos btw.
All is okay apart from I keep getting these horrible shakes/weak spells out of the blue like I need sugar, does anyone know if it could be the metformin causing this? I've tried looking on the net but can't seem to get a clear answer so just wondering if anyone else has experienced this

Are you taking it with food? I find that helps. Whats your dosage and how often are you taking it?

HotDogGuy · 11/05/2020 15:19

Metformin is also taking for diabetes so it could very well be a side effect. Make sure you take with food.

Yeah I had that when I first started them. My doctor said it shouldn't cause low blood sugar but I'd definitely did. I ended up phasing my dose up gradually so started with 500mg every other day and then slowly built it up to the full 1000. It seemed to help a bit. Only cure for the shakes was food/sugary drink.

Thanks for the replies!
I take 1000mg so two tablets a day, the morning tablet I don't take with food as I have it as soon as I get up but the evening tablet I take with my tea.
Some days I'm okay but most days I get the shakes and they come on out of nowhere! I have some sugar and I'm okay again

It might not be “low” blood sugar, just lower for you and it’ll take a few days for your body to get used to it. I wouldn’t have the sugar to fix them for a few days and see if your body adjusts.

I take it for the same reason. Take each tablet with food and speak to your dr about possibly switching to the slow release version. I didn't have the shakes but until I switched I had headaches similar to hunger / sugar drop headaches. Also; taking them without food upset my stomach terribly.

When I first started them I did get a bad tummy but now that's really on and off.
I didn't realise they did slow release ones. I have been waking up most days with an horrendous headache too

Mine is slow release and still got the shakes a bit. My fertility nurse once said that girls with pcos tend to run slightly higher blood sugars naturally so when the metformin treats it back to normal I guess its low for us.

Thanks for the advice, I will try making sure I have the first one with food too and see if that helps.
