Recommendations for noise cancelling headphones?

I’m looking for some for silence due to being able to hear next doors tv all day. I have to say their tv isn’t very loud but I can constantly hear a low grumble which reverberates round my head even the other side of the house.

I’m looking at reviews but most reviews are about the music quality when playing Bluetooth music. I want them for silence, not listening to my music. What do I need? Is it some type of £200 active noise cancelling ones.....or would some cheap ear defenders do the job?

I have akg noise cancelling
It takes away the background ground hum / noise and the music sound is great . It was 2nd in a good housekeeping test ( 1st was Bose but they were ££££’s )
Dp liked mine and bought himself a pair , we sit on flights ( remember them ) looking like some geeky tech twins lol

Would they work if you just wanted silence while reading? So not for listening to music?

Bose - worth the investment. DH sleeps in them when away with work (army) and sharing a room with 50 other blokes he can still get a descent night sleep and uses the noise cancelling function.

Also run in them and they are great and on long haul flights, cancles out the plane noise I would say for 80% of it

I invested in a pair of Sony WH-1000XM3 noise cancelling headphones before lockdown and they’ve been a life saver! We’re both working from home and my DP does a call based role so having the headphones allows me peace to work (we can’t work in separate rooms...small flat so we’re working in close proximity.)
They’re great headphones and I definitely think they’re worth the money.

If I’m using them in my living room it won’t stop totally the noise of the telly but if it was next doors were you were just getting a backgrounds noise rather than a full sound then it would be ok .
For example my normal train station has a moterway flyover next to it and if I put the headphones on the noise is minimal . If it wasn’t quiet enough you could play something soothing through them very low , rainforest ? Chill out music ? classical ?
Normally in a shop they let you try 1st but I realise not poss at the moment , have a look at the good housekeeping review and see what you think

I have Bose. They are good but agree with pp assessment. They don't provide silence. Good on planes to reduce the engine rumbles. Being totally honest I hoped they'd be more effective but my expectations may have been too high.

Bose quiet comfort 35. The 35 series are wireless so can be worn as you wonder around. From £125 in refurbished condition on e at around £240 new.

I use the Bose in ear sport headphones which I love as they slip in my pocket for travel but not as comfortable or effective as the over ear ones.

Ear defenders that are over ear tend to be tight fitting and work with pressure on the ears - they really aren't comfortable to wear for long periods. The small squishy disposable in ear ones are quite effective and very cheap - I got my son a big bag for £5, again off eBay.

We've all got the Bose ones. Tbh, I only ever wear them on planes - but they're bloody fantastic on there.

I got the Sony WH-CH700N - wireless with mic.
Got them at the beginning of lock down.
They are excellent and I can wear them all day without problems.

I’m in a similar position - I want silence when I work. I currently use the squishy ear-plugs but they make me feel a bit weird & disorientated, so wondering if noise-cancelling headphones would be a better option.

I have a pair of Bose headphones - they were megabucks (around £300) but they were worth it for me. I can wfh quite happily whilst my 3 dd potter about, I do occasionally miss things like the sound of them coming into my study. They are brilliant on planes. I love them and I very very rarely listen to music - I use them for silence or if I am watching a movie in bed and don't want to disturb the dds.

I bought a pair of ear defenders to block out noise. They do the job but they’re too tight and give me a headache. I know how you feel op. I hate to hear neighbours.

I have Bose and use them on my train commute and on planes where they are excellent. $$$$ but got them an eBay 1/2 price

I’ve got the same as @SweetPetrichor, Sony WH-1000XM3. I think they’d be good for your needs as they do block out background noise. I hoover with them on and they block out most of that. I’m not sure if they’d be worth the money if you don’t plan on using them for anything else though.

If you have an iPhone the newer version of the Airpods have noise-cancelling technology.

I've got the latest Apple AirPods, they are good at blocking out noise, you can even use them on the underground.
They are very light and wireless, but they make me feel a little like I am underwater because of the pressure in my ears.
I use them when mowing the lawn because I don't like the loud noise of the mower, and they work then.
They are around £250 - you can try them (pre-cvid) in JL or Apple to see if you like them.

Bose are the best. DH uses his a lot when working from home to blank out the household/street noise.

Another vote for Bose,perfect for blocking out noise,I wear mine in the garden a lot and it blocks out the noises from neighbours. Also really good for blocking sounds on a plane. The sound is really good on them too and I wouldn't use anything else.
Not sure if the price is worth it for your needs though?

The Bose are so expensive and the Sony’s are about the same! Maybe I’ll get cheaper ones with good reviews and hope after lockdown they go out more!

Normally they just watch tv in their living room and I can’t hear it but their son has moved back in and seems to be watching tv in the echoy kitchen.

The Bose are amazing

Pricey, but for me in terms of £/ hour worn, they are looking like great value.

I wear mine during the day for WFH and on an evening whilst I’m reading a book and DH is watching tripe on TV. Or to watch my programs on the laptop. They Don’t catch 100% of noise for reading, but I use them with a white noise app, and play white noise + gentle rainfall noises and can’t hear a damn thing.

Look at Shure SRH840, they have passive noise cancelling but you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. About £100 from Amazon.
