Need to give up wine

I'm overweight, anxious and it's really messing with my life. I can drink a bottle and not feel tipsy. Then wake up with no recollection of going to bed. Drinking far too much. Gin and beer I am fine on, can have one or two no problem. The wine is not my friend.

There is an alcohol support topic in the health section, plenty of people in a similar position over that way. Over 500 calories in a bottle of Pinot Grigio. I wish I didn’t know that Blush

I can drink a bottle and not feel tipsy, just relaxed. I feel absolutely fine the next day with no memory issues! But I try t confine it to weekends and regularly give up for a month or two.
I have a friend who easily goes through two bottles a day (every day) and also has no hangover the next day. I've tried to get her to join me when I go dry but no luck so far. I do worry about her (she's married with kids and runs the house really well - but it must be having some consequences)!

I don't blackout often and def not after one bottle. More when I mix or edge towards the end of the second (or more). It messes up my sleep, and my ability to cope in general - concentrate at work etc

On the plus side I had really started smoking again, and haven't had one since lockdown.

I had a delivery yesterday - bad timing. I've put it in the car. At least it's not in the fridge

Me too..... was a bottle a night but since lockdown have increased to 2 more glasses from second bottle.

Have a look at The Alcohol Experiment and This Naked Mind, Annie Grace, really sensible logic to cut down/out

Hoohaahoo · 12/05/2020 11:09

Same. Even if it’s just for vanity reasons, I get a terrible wine tummy. It’s pure bloat!

fluckityfluckfluck · 12/05/2020 13:04

I've not had a drink since Friday....longest in a long time. Trying to be healthier in general. The struggle for me if when the kids go to their dads which is tomorrow for three nights (same every week).

My default is to eat and drink in front of TV so am going to try walking/jigsaw and maybe even sitting on spin bike that is just gathering dust gently cycling while watching tv....

Hey OP,
I was exactly the same as you, I loved wine! And drunk it heavily on a regular basis! I am now a month sober.

Firstly amazing work for acknowledging you need to cut down, that’s the hardest bit.

Some little tips I found really helped me:

  • At first supplementing wine with a hot toddy on a cold, windy evening or a low calorie cider on a sunny day.
  • Exercising, I notice such an improvement when I’m not drinking which encourages me to keep it up.
  • Winding down with a bath, face mask, pedicure (keep my hands and mind busy)
  • I still needed something to unwind so I spent money on some fancy hot chocolates or some nice teas.

Tbh these may not help but they aided me and after two weeks I noticed a difference in my skin, weight, bloating, stamina, bank account and overall health which encouraged me to keep it up!

It’s the hardest thing in the world, you’ve got this x

I’m with you op! Only difference is that a bottle of wine keeps me awake for half the night, no idea why it has that effect. My dh loves wine too an we are so happy when having a few glasses together. Like others have said, we are both fine to have one or two beers or g&ts, but we can’t drink wine in moderation. Must stop, the recycling bin is shameful Blush

I used to drink a bottle a night but stopped for all your reasons and because I was dieting. Lost 3 stone with diet and exercise. In summer months the wine creeps up as I associate it with pleasure eg sitting in the garden with a glass of wine or going to local beer garden but it always makes me hungover and lacking in concentration. Have taken up the gin only on weekends and as I don't enjoy it quite so much I only have a few. I feel so much better and feel that I've really turned a corner as I thought I was stuck in a rut with the wine.

Thanks everyone, it's nice to feel I'm not alone. Just been on a 7 km walk with the kids and am cooking tea. Realised how automatic it is for me to pour a glass while cooking, am having a sparkling water instead. Just need to do the same tomorrow

One beer yesterday and one today. No wine for 6 days. Haven't drank as little as two beers a week in a looooong time
