Do you smoke, do your friends and colleagues?

I was wondering about this. I saw someone smoking yesterday and realised I don't think that I know anyone who does.

When I was growing up though it was really common. My mum smoked 20+ a day until I was about 10 when she decided to give up. My dad smoked until I was nearly 20 (and probably carried on in secret!!)

People must smoke or they'd not be for sale and I'd not keep seeing cigarette butts on the pavement but how common is it now? Also they seem to cost a fortune - about £10 a pack - that must really add up for heavy smokers.

I do, but not a great deal, probably 20 a week. I'll be stopping shortly as I smoke Menthol and these will be banned from 20th May.

TARSCOUT · 10/05/2020 12:53

I don't but DP does. As an ex smoker I enjoy the smell!

listsandbudgets · 10/05/2020 12:54

My mum smoked Menthol. Green packet with a gold crest if I remember rightly San Moritz or something. Why are they particularity being banned?

Most people I know who smoked have long since given up except a few friends (late 20s or early 30s) who smoke roll ups sometimes.

Since I left my last job where one or two did, I don't think I know anyone now who buys actual cigarettes.

I saw an old episode of Gavin and Stacey and was really taken aback at everyone smoking. There seems to have been a real shift away from it. Maybe a big factor is the cost as that seems extortionate.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 10/05/2020 12:57

I don't smoke. I work in an office with 4 others, one of them is a vaper, the others don't smoke.

I think people are more likely to smoke if their parents smoke. My mum doesn't smoke and I don't. Her brother (my uncle) doesn't smoke and nor so his wife and children. Her sister (my aunt) and her husband both smoke, and their two children both smoke.

SillyCow6 · 10/05/2020 13:01

I never have and neither has any of my close family and friends. I cannot stand the smell and Im afraid I really do look down on those that do smoke, purely because it affects other people, both with the cancer risk but also just the stink. Especially when I meet health care professionals that smoke and think they have managed to cover the smell, I think it is disgusting to inflict it on anyone, especially those that are ill
Thankfully where I live there are not many smokers out and about, although it was banned here in public places quite early

ClientQ · 10/05/2020 13:03

Smoked from age 12 to 32 and was on 30 a day when I quit. I vape now Smile

RuthW · 10/05/2020 13:04

Out of all my friends, family and work colleagues I know two smokers.

Biancadelrioisback · 10/05/2020 13:06

DH smokes. Probably 8-10 a day (more if he's drinking). Our very good friends both smoke too. Quite a lot of my friends will have the odd cig on a night out. I'm a former smoker and haven't smoked since I fell pregnant 4 years ago so the smell doesn't bother me

oooompa · 10/05/2020 13:08

I used to smoke and gave up when trying for DD2. I've definitely noticed a decline in the amount of people I see smoking (quit in 2018) and not many of my colleagues smoke now. When I started there was always a large group of people at the smoking stop.

LadyContrary · 10/05/2020 13:09

I smoke but similarly to one of pp, I’ll be quitting soon as I only like menthols.
I buy one packet (20) and it lasts me a week, so not exactly a heavy smoker but I will my wee menthol ciggie every now and again.

lovelilies · 10/05/2020 13:09

I stopped just over 6m ago, I'm 39.
Two of my friends still smoke (one only at home), 2 vape.

DelurkingAJ · 10/05/2020 13:10

Not many at all. They’re definitely the exceptions. A friend commented on it at a party we had 15 years or so ago...he’s about 15 years older than us and it really struck him that nobody was vanishing outside to smoke.

heartsonacake · 10/05/2020 13:10

No I don’t. My friends and family don’t either.

I deliberately surround myself with people who aren’t selfish enough to make others suffer their toxic waste.

lachy · 10/05/2020 13:14

@listsandbudgets It's because flavoured tobacco is seen as appealing to young people.

I'm not young, and neither are any the other smokers I know, I started smoking menthols in my 30's before that I smoked Marlboro lights.

SuperficialSuzie · 10/05/2020 13:14

Used to from teens to late 20s. Tried to give up several times during that period but very difficult as everybody bar one person in my social group smoked so they were always around. We used to smoke on public transport, in pubs, in offices. Unthinkable now.

I only have one friend who smokes now, she said between her and her husband, the amount they spend on fags could have paid the mortgage on another house Shock

ExpletiveDelighted · 10/05/2020 13:17

I only know one or two now. Hardly know anyone that vapes either.

Noworrieshere · 10/05/2020 13:17

Of my friendship group, in our 20s everyone smoked. In our 40s only one of us smokes. She started again a year or so back during a really stressful period at work.

Dh's cousin smokes. He's the only person in our family. We only see him occasionally at family events and the kids were always fascinated by this guy who kept sneaking out to smoke. They used to go out and watch him smoke.

hiredandsqueak · 10/05/2020 13:19

I don't smoke and never have and none of my children smoke. Two of my sisters and a brother all smoke. Something I find incredulous as they like me watched, as young teens, our mother die a slow and painful death from lung cancer. Of my nephews and nieces with smoking parents four of the six smoke and two vape. Other than them I don't know of any other smokers among friends and family.

tectonicplates · 10/05/2020 13:19

I can't think of anyone who smokes in my family or immediate circle of friends. I always notice the difference when I occasionally meet a group of people where they all smoke. It changes the atmosphere. Particularly things like you'll go to the pub and they'll all want to sit at an outdoor table in the middle of winter. It's a real culture clash thing.

Theonewiththecat · 10/05/2020 13:22

My mum and dad smoke, my grandparents all smoked but all gave up. My brother started smoking at about 14 and gave up started vaping at 21.
Loads of my colleagues smoke, I would say more than half of them.
The smell doesn't bother me when I'm around it, but when I've been out or to my mums I do come home and can smell smoke on myself.

BroomstickOfLove · 10/05/2020 13:22

I smoked at university, as did probably a but more than half of my friends. I stopped before I graduated. For the rest of my twenties, around a quarter of my social smoked. When we hit our thirties, and people started having babies, almost everyone stopped. A couple of people my age still smoke, I think, but I never see them do it, so I only know if they mention it in conversation. A higher proportion of my colleagues smoke - maybe a third of a small team. The biggest group smokers I know are all over sixty.

Confusedaboutthis01 · 10/05/2020 13:25

I was thinking a while back how I don’t see as many people smoking anymore. I’m an ex smoker I quit when I found out I was pregnant and I still miss it to be honest but I’ve come too far now to ever do it again. I think there’s a slow decline in smoking

GOODCAT · 10/05/2020 13:26

I don't smoke. None of my friends smoke, but I have colleagues who do and majority of husband's family do. I also see people waiting at the same bus stop as me who are smoking.

Fortunately it is far less prevalent now. Delighted it has reduced. I hate being around cigarette smoke and it was inescapable before, especially growing up, even though my parents didn't smoke.

iklboo · 10/05/2020 13:32

My parents smoke. Both seriously ill with smoking related diseases. All four grandparents on my side died of smoking related diseases. I've never smoked, never even tried it.

A couple of our friends smoke, a few colleagues do and it stinks when they come back in.

All three BILs smoke, two SILs. Quite a few relatives used to but have given up.

DH started smoking at 16 but gave up nearly 20 years ago.
