Absolute beginner's online yoga....

Or a yoga/ Pilates merge!

I'm late 50s, a bit overweight, with a bad back and am getting stiffer by the day.

People are recommending yoga and or Pilates to me.

Can anyone recommend an online class,in the absence of a RL one! One that starts at the beginning and guides you through.

TIA

Yoga with Adrienne on YouTube is great - she has 30 days programmes and yoga for specific things but she also has a yoga for beginners session. Worth checking out

Kassandra on YouTube has some nice easy 10 minute practices which are ideal for beginners. Plus, no waffley shite.?

Yoga with Adrienne. All free, she's done loads of 30-day programmes over the years - some specific for different age groups/needs. She's really good, down to earth, doesn't yabber too much and her dog is lovely x

I’m not flexible enough for yoga, even at beginner level. I saw a recommendation here for Jessica Valant Pilates and found that much less dispiriting!

Legallybleachblonde · 10/05/2020 12:31

I'm doing Casey Batchelor's Yoga Blitz and it's brilliant! It comes with a meal plan too. 25 minutes at least 4 times a week.

I use one called 'beginners yoga for bigger bodies' The lady demonstrating is a size 20ish and the lady teaching is so encouraging but very clear on the 'only do what you can'. Even after a couple of sessions I'm finding the 'what I can do' is increasing.

PenfoldsFive · 10/05/2020 13:14

Oh helpful, that sounds great. Is it on YouTube?

helpfulperson · 10/05/2020 13:55

It's this one

I am 54 and started Adrienne absolute beginners etc when I was 52 and there was no way I could physically do almost any of what a lithe yoga guru in her 30s (?) considers "absolute beginners"
So, I started with chair yoga for about a month which kind of loosened me up, then moved onto Adrienne. She is super lovely and makes you feel good just for trying. But absolute beginners by Adrienne would have had me absolutely in the orthopedic ward!

lazylinguist · 10/05/2020 14:02

Yoga with Adriene, definitely.

Miljea · 10/05/2020 22:51

Thank you! Any other thoughts, of course, always welcome!

@helpfulperson

Thanks for that. That's my morning exercise sorted tomorrow 😊

I've seen that Adrienne recommended loads. Might take a look at that Tuesday, but @helpful's seems more 'me' 😊

Watching with interest. Thanks for starting the thread op. Smile

Great thread OP. Can I ask does yoga help lose weight and tone?

Great thread OP. Can I ask does yoga help lose weight and tone?

It depends what kind of yoga you do, but yes it definitely can. Most yoga will tone your muscles. Any yoga which raises your heart rate will help a little bit with weight loss (although that's almost entirely down to your diet tbh). If you're not very fit, yoga routines can very easily raise your heart rate or even get you out of breath from the exertion, even though you're not running or jumping about.

lazylinguist · 11/05/2020 09:38

Yoga is also so great for strength and flexibility and it can really help your body deal with not only other exercise like running and walking, but also just daily things like lifting things, bending down etc. I've been walking a lot during lockdown and was beginning to get niggly knee twinges, sore feet etc and find rougher terrain tricky. I hadn't been doing much yoga for a while, so I started doing a routine daily about week ago. I can already feel the difference on my long walks. Adriene's short post-run yoga routine also helped cure my plantar fasciitis a while back. Yoga is brilliant. Grin

BluebellsareBlue · 11/05/2020 20:52

@lazylinguist thank you. I walk the dog 4 miles a day and 7-10 miles on a weekend. I'll look into this a bit more.

Thanks, again, everyone!
