I do hope so, my dad will buy me a few hanging baskets 👍

attackedbycritters · 09/05/2020 18:54

Isn't the idea that if we make it safe, then it's safe enough for almost everyone?

Over 70s are not being asked to shield , they are just like the overweight, the asthmatics etc, told to be take more care , make more restrictive choices if possible

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2020 18:56

What is so special about garden centres? Confused There's no tea and cake yet so there's no appeal for me.

My parents are in their 80s but can't see them being the first in the queue.

user200000000 · 09/05/2020 18:58

I'm not over 70 and I like going to the garden centre. Lots of young gardeners out there.

iVampire · 09/05/2020 19:00

I think you’re confusing the over 70s with the shielding group.

No reason at all why a non-shielding person should avoid a garden centre once non-essential shopping is permitted

MaureenMLove · 09/05/2020 19:01

Do you have to be over 70 to go to a garden centre then? I'd love to go to a garden centre right now and I'm far from over 70! I am in the shielding section of the population though, so I still can't go! Sad

TheYellowOfTheEgg · 09/05/2020 19:02

Again, over 70s are just advised to be extra stringent with social distancing. They are NOT being advised to stay at home for 12 week just for being over 70. They can go to the supermarket/garden centre and queue 2m apart like everyone else or they might not want to.

I am in my 50s and have mild asthma so I'm in the same category as a 70+ person with no underlying conditions.

BeetrootRocks · 09/05/2020 19:03

Christ if the garden centres open it will be so exciting everyone will be there Grin

I've always liked garden centres, not an age thing. If you're retired you do have more time for gardening though.

Me too! But a lovely friend has offered to go for me, so I am compiling a wish list

ExpletiveDelighted · 09/05/2020 19:06

I can't wait for them to be open, I'm nowhere near 70.

FlamingoAndJohn · 09/05/2020 19:07

My mother, who is 68 has already been to the local farm supplies shop. It sells everything from tractors to pet food. It also has certain gardening supplies.
She wanted some farm yard manure. Usually you pay at the till and drive round with your ticket. Then you give your ticket to a person who loads up your vehicle.
However, due to social distancing they can’t do this right now.
So my mother, who will not be stopped, climbed up the pallet of bags of manure and chucked them off the top to load up the car.

(I don’t know what point I’m making here but it made me laugh)

user200000000 · 09/05/2020 19:09

Garden centres need to open or thousands of plant will end up being destroyed and goodness knows how many jobs and businesses will be lost.

BeetrootRocks · 09/05/2020 19:15

My parents did say to me excitedly that our local garden centre will maybe be opening Tues Grin

StealthPolarBear · 09/05/2020 19:17

"What is so special about garden centres? confused There's no tea and cake yet so there's no appeal for me."
Completely agree!

user200000000 · 09/05/2020 19:19

It's about peoples businesses and jobs, not tea and bloody cake.

Vintagevixen · 09/05/2020 19:20

They probably will, as will many under 70's. I see nothing wrong with that.

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2020 19:20

Oh, sorry about that @user20000000, I will be up there for compost, hanging baskets and loads of other things I don't need as soon as I can to keep them going. Wink

StealthPolarBear · 09/05/2020 19:24

user200000000 but why garden centres in particular? Genuine question, is it just because they're generally quite big so can support social distancing

PotteringAlong · 09/05/2020 19:26

stealth I think it’s a combination of being big and then having big parts of them that are outside.

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/05/2020 19:26

They can make their own minds up. As long as they’re being extra careful.

Mascotte · 09/05/2020 19:27

They are perfectly entitled to do so.

RainMustFall · 09/05/2020 19:27

Won't the 20s 30s 40s 50s 60s want to go to the garden centre? Hmm

attackedbycritters · 09/05/2020 19:27

Space, lots of outdoor stuff, not all indoors, and possibly also because people gardening and being fit and active outdoors

WithIcePlease · 09/05/2020 19:27

I've got an appointment at 930 on Monday Smile
I'm ridiculously excited
This one was open last week anyway on appointments

user200000000 · 09/05/2020 19:29

Garden centres are mostly quite big and mostly outdoors. I'm not sure why they were closed in the first place.
