Has anyone got any experience of a child that stammers?

My 3 year 7 month old DD has just started stammering out of the blue. She had good language prior to this and was fairly articulate with a reasonably good vocabulary. Then within a week she is now struggling to get a sentence out, stutters multiple times within a sentence and sometimes can't get anything out at all.

It's so upsetting to watch. She's also taken to doing a sort of high pitched squeal at the start of her sentences.

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of stuttering? Google is not helping me feel better about it!

Hey Kiop/gibbled,

How are your little ones doing now with their stutter? I have a little one in the exact same position and it's hesrt breaking.

He started off with the stammer at just the beginning of the sentence but now it's mid sentence too and he's blocking.

I'd be really interested to know how your little ones are doing

Yes, my eldest received speech therapy for a stammer when he was 3-4. We self referred because his stammer had been present quite a long time by then (several months). He was an early talker with a wide vocabulary so he definitely fit the description of a child with too much to say struggling to get the words out.

Most of the early speech therapy involved active listening on my part (not interrupting or drawing attention to the stammer), and lots of description/observation of what he was doing (the cat is up the tree, and other such things during his imaginative play).

His did eventually pass and at 6 we haven’t seen it for a while. But it was quite stressful for us for a while.

My dd had a stammering stage around 3yo

It disappeared after a year or so. We saw a specialist HV who said it is common and to to not draw attention to it but gently correct on occasion

That concept was tricky for my inlaws who constantly finished her sentences and told her to speak properly Hmm

But anyway, all was well with very little actual intervention
