Out of date food

Would you cook and eat plain rice in a pouch that has a date of March 2020 and a katsu sauce in a plastic tub from August 2019? I've been clearing out the cupboards and just noticed these. My plan was to eat it for lunch and dinner today with chicken.

Is it best before rather than use by?

FelicityBeedle · 09/05/2020 11:14

Yes and yes

Oh good point. It's best before. Although rereading the rice packet tells me it was Jan it went out of date. Not sure what I was looking at!
How long after a best before date is safe do you think?

Best before just means quality may be affected, it's not unsafe

LifeBeginsNow · 09/05/2020 11:24

Ok thank you. I'm doing it! I'll let you know after lunch if it turns out ok 😃

We had some dried noodles last night with BBE 06/2018. We are all fine. Dried rice will be fine for a long time.

My mint sauce is BB Oct 2017, we're still alive after eating it a couple of weeks ago.

TheHighestSardine · 09/05/2020 12:09

Rice will be fine - dried lasts almost forever. The katsu I'd sniff, sometimes the vegetable oil goes a bit icky when it's too old, not dangerous just not pleasant.

It was pretty good in the end and I have a portion for later so no cooking! Thanks all!

Yes ... but I am the person who used 10-year-old custard powder so you might want to ignore me.

My brother has just put a message in our group chat to say he used a tin yesterday that was use by March 2016!

AtleastitsnotMonday · 09/05/2020 13:58

Paprika didn’t turn up in my online shop the other week, my mum has given me hers because ‘she doesn’t use it often,’ BBE Aug 1998!

Ha at least there's no wastage going on. Ive got a tin of black beans and one of lentils to work with at some point. Not my type of food but bought for a failed diet.

Lentils: large cut onions, sausages, fry up together, lentils in, bit of balsamic, serve over potatoes or with hunks of buttered bread (like a chili).

Black beans I only use in one Mexican side dish, but it's really good! tideandthyme.com/ellys-world-famous-black-beans/
Ooh, there's a bunch of nice stuff linked off there... noted for next shop :)

LifeBeginsNow · 09/05/2020 20:56

Thanks sardine. The lentils recipie sounds like good comfort food. I wonder if I can get the little one to eat it...

Ooh, if you're likely to make it I should also say it also wants a chicken oxo cube and mixed Italian herbs or just thyme. Garlic if you like (I do). I usually chop the sausages into thirds. It's really nice!
