Concussion is from a head injury - right?

My preschooler has just fallen over while having a hard plastic toy in his mouth. Lots of blood & crying. No teeth missing, tongue still attached and intact.
Given him calpol & he's now asleep - I don't have to worry about concussion if he didn't bang his head, do I?

To add - happy to take him to A&E if needed, just don't want to over-react.

Not if he didn’t bang his head, no.

It is possible to have concussion without hitting your head. If he's showing signs of concussion you should get him checked.

It doesn't have to involve a bang to the head. It's caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head.

The time my child did have concussion, school didnt initially realise he'd bumped his head as he didnt get "an egg". They were more worried about his arm and leg scrapes.

Keep an eye on him until you go to bed - I'd go in every hour, and just make sure he's rousable - so if you move his teddy he snuggles back down again sort of thing, you dont need to actually wake him. That's based on gut instinct rather than a medical background tho.

It's when you hit your head hard enough that your brain hits the skull resulting in a bruised brain. Hence the issues with having a concussion

Yeah, I fell and knocked my teeth through my lip before and got a leaflet from the hospital about what to expect from a head injury...

Thanks all. I've phoned nhs111 and they told me to take him to A&E.

111 has to tell you to go to a&e to cover themselves.

If your son wasn’t showing any signs of abnormal sleepiness or confusion he would have been fine.

TheOwlandThe · 08/05/2020 20:13

Is he showing signs of concussion?

It is possible to get concussion from a jolt rather than a bang. But if he seems himself, hasnt been feeling sick/dizzy/abnormally sleepy I wouldnt worry.

badparentaward · 08/05/2020 21:35

He was abnormally sleepy, which is why I was concerned.

Hope he's ok
