Is this a no go? I have s great tried and tested recipe but it uses 500g plain flour and 1 TSP baking powder - if I add another couple of teaspoons of bp to make the self raising flour will they taste rank?

Yes I absolutely know this is a very boring question. 🤣 X

Should think it will be fine.

Happygirl79 · 08/05/2020 13:06

They will taste just as good

1 teaspoon of baking powder to every 175g of plain flour makes self raising - I only found this out 2 days ago GrinGrin

I always use plain with baking powder added as above.

Use baking powder or they will end up flat. (More like welsh cakes.)

I'm going for 4tsp of baking powder for 500g plain flour. And hoping for the best ...

Different country here - we have no self raising flour - and yet - we do bake! GrinGrin

Megatron · 08/05/2020 13:53

@ProkupatuscrakedatusGrin it's just the ratio of bp to plain flour I'm never sure of. I'm sure you're a much better baker than I am anyway, I'm not great!

@megatron
Oh no, not me - DH is the one who bakes to bake off standards.
My stuff is edible. I only heard about self raising flour on MN and DH mentioned scones this morning at breakfast and I had to google how to make clotted cream (There is a place here that actually does those things but, of course, closed now).

I've made scones with plain flour, it tells you on the baking powder tub how much to add to make it equivalent to self raising. Think its 3tsp to 8oz plain flour.

Well I used a little less flour in the end 450g and 3 tsp bp. Had a disaster when making because managed to get flour everywhere and didn't have the right type of sugar so I thought they would be awful. Weirdly they're the nicest scones I've ever made. No more buying SR flour for me. Grin
