DS new iphone 11 lost/stolen - how to stop someone using it?

DS had iphone 11 for Christmas. He left it on a bus (grrrrrrr) and its gone. Tried bus companies etc etc etc. I cancelled the SIM and got a new SIM for him to put in an old phone.

I want to try and prevent whoever has the phone from using it, it was well locked down but I'm sure it will be hacked - how to I register it so it is marked as a lost/stolen phone?

And no insurance on it aaggghhhhh the pain

Have you locked it via Find my iPhone?

WishIWasARunner · 08/05/2020 11:48

I'm not sure I'll ask him when he's back from work

He needs to log into his iCloud/apple account and he can either track it (if it's on) or disable it from there.

Isn't the iPhone 11 the one that is opened by facial recognition?
Or can people who really know what they are doing get around that?

Frlrlrubert · 08/05/2020 13:04

If it doesn't recognise your face you can put in the passcode, but yeah, unlikely anyone could actually use it.

Seems obvious but has he tried calling it? Someone might have it and just be waiting for someone to call and claim it.

Will you be able to do any of these things if you e cancelled the SIM? It needs data and connection to the internet to work...which do so via the SIM???

Depends on why?

If you want to protect his data, you can completely erase the device via find my. However this prevents you from tracking the device again. And if you remove the device from his account, this also removes the iCloud activation lock so the thief can set up the phone as normal

If you want to prevent the thief from setting up the phone, don’t remove the device from his account. Also call your network provider and ask for your stolen phone to be blacklisted on the network

Just going to honest, I doubt the thief is looking to use it. Probably just going to see how much they can sell it for, activation locked or not.

I've just googled. If you've cancelled the SIM already there's nothing you can do unless the phone connects to a WiFi network.

iPhones are almost unhackable, they're basically bricks.

Do this - Apple support page on how to deal with lost/stolen:

I’m not sure this will work because you have cancelled the sim but with a try. You need to log into find my iPhone. It will show you exactly where the phone is. The phone will make a noise and you can add a message asking for the phone to be taken to a location for you to collect it.
