What do you do? Especially now we’re all at home?

I do weight training, but this shouldn’t be done daily due to recovery time (and weight training makes me really hungry which negates the benefits in terms of burning calories). I’ve also taken up couch to 5k, but again, they recommend at least a day between runs. And neither of these takes an hour anyway.

What does everyone else do daily? I really want to use the rest of lockdown to lose some weight and get fit. I’m starting 16:8 and much healthier eating for my food, but would love to increase exercise to.

I ache in the mornings (getting old!) so have been waiting until the evening to exercise, but then I’m usually too tired (home schooling and working) - I’m just going to have to suffer, aren’t I? At least I’ll be fit and aching rather than fat and aching!

@Peonyonpoint It's a Keiser M3 (my gym used to use them before the newer Stages bikes)

I bought it (reconditioned) about 8 years ago. It was expensive but a worthwhile investment for me. It's showing it's age but I love it.

They are on eBay but at the moment they are going for absolutely crazy money.

Bargainhuntbore · 08/05/2020 09:10

6-10 mile run most mornings. Im usually up at 5:30-6am so i go up the mountain to see the sun. Mornings are glorious!

I often go for a 3 mile walk in the evenings too.
3 times a week i do a class with a PT with weight. Group of us tune into her Facebook to do it.

Which are the best Les Mills HIIT workouts?

OP posts:
Pinkblueberry · 08/05/2020 10:37

I go running. About 30 mins and then maybe 15 or so minutes of toning with crunches etc. Also a lot of walking and Jillian Michaels DVDs that I’ve had for years.
If you’re reasonably fit I don’t see why you need couch to 5k. I didn’t run for about a year after having DS, then decided one day to get up and go and did almost 5k - it wasn’t easy but still very doable, unless you’re an absolutely beginner in exercising or have joint/muscle issues I don’t think a gradual build up is necessary. If you want to run just go for it as long as you can for what is just past comfortable.

45 mins spin, 30 mins yoga and ten mins abs. Every day.

Some days 8 chuck in a 5km run

BasinHaircut · 08/05/2020 10:42

Ohh thanks for the tip about the Les Mills @Boopear!

Shannith · 08/05/2020 10:52

Couch to 5k- I'm on week 7 so that's 36 mins if I time it right, more like 40.

I do runners yoga with adrianne before, about 20 mins then her runners post run, about 10 mins.

Do 10-15 mins abs each day (only states this week)

I also walk dog for about an hour and a half each day.

Then on non running days I do weights (arms) for about 30 mins and neck and shoulder yoga with adrianne - 20 mins.

When not in lockdown I walk further/longer (which is why I'm running now as I was surprised how much my body missed/needs exercise) and I ride 3 times a week as well.

I do t drive so get a lot of "natural" exercise just getting about.

WeveGottaGetTherouxThis · 08/05/2020 10:52

I walk 7-10km a day and then do weighted HIITs 4 times a week.

Louise0701 · 08/05/2020 10:53

A long walk & a HIIT class or 30 mins circuit on the boxing bag

BBBear · 08/05/2020 12:12

@Shannith I was a lot fitter and slimmer when I lived in town - I used to walk everywhere, school, shopping, etc. I put on weight when I moved to the country as I now have to drive everywhere. The everyday movements make a world of difference.

The best Les Mills hiit classes are the Grit ones. You've got cardio, plyo and strength. The cardio ones need no weights. My favourites are the strength ones.

BBBear · 08/05/2020 12:17

I went for a 7k bike ride - I live in a hilly area so it took me 15 mins on the way out (downhill) and 25 mins on the way back, then did some weights - I might do some HIIT later, but we do have bank holiday cocktails planned for this afternoon!

@Pinkblueberry I agree with your thoughts on running and will start doing that instead of C25K - I want to go running through the forest but haven’t been because it’s very hilly, if I just do what I did on the bike today (cycled as much as I could then walked for a bit) then I know I’ll be able to go at my own pace over the hills.

OP posts:
BBBear · 08/05/2020 12:18

@nbee84 what’s plyo?

OP posts:
nbee84 · 08/05/2020 12:23

Plyometric training. Jumping movements, so jump squats, lunges, hops etc

Panticus · 08/05/2020 12:24

I walk or ride my horse every morning for about 40 ,minutes. On top of that, my schedule is:

Saturday or Sunday: 12-20km run, lots of hills - tough
Monday: bodyweight HIIT session - moderate (usually tired legs from weekend)
Tuesday: 6-9km run - relatively easy
Wednesday: Kettlebells session - tough
Thursday: running intervals on the treadmill - tough
Friday: HIIT with DBs or KBs - tough

I have found a few good websites I really like for the HIIT and KB sessions and have a WhatsApp group with my gym buddies to keep me motivated. I still struggle with motivation on some days but I know my mental health suffers if I don't exercise!

BBBear · 08/05/2020 12:25

@nbee84 thank you - I’ll give Grit a go

People who do Les Mills - do you stick with one workout so you can get the routine right? There are lots to choose from!

OP posts:
BBBear · 08/05/2020 12:27

@Panticus I think the keyword there is ‘Tough’ - my workouts tend to fall on the ‘easy’ end of the spectrum!

OP posts:
Bigsighall · 08/05/2020 12:28

Les mills on demand is great. I’ll maybe just pick a couple of tracks if I’m not in the mood or do a full session if I am.
Dogs and horses make up the rest of the exercise!

veryvery · 08/05/2020 12:44

I run for about an hour and ten to an hour and twenty minutes everyday. Then do some strength exercises.

I'm going to have to start doing some walking too, though, as yesterday was the first time in ages I'd walked in ages and I went to post a letter. Well! It felt really weird, like I'd forgotten how to walk properly!Shock Sort of slow and wobbly.

nbee84 · 08/05/2020 12:45

I think if you're doing combat or attack it's worth doing the same one a few times to master the moves. I find once you know what you're doing you can up the intensity as you're not just concentrating on going the right way! The grit and pump less so as the choreography is less. The grit classes are pretty intense but you can work at your own level, there's no need to match the instructor's moves.

megletthesecond · 08/05/2020 12:48

Run and HIIT in the garden most days.

Panticus · 08/05/2020 12:53

Mix it up @BBBear. You need some days that are lighter to let the body recover and some days you really hit it hard. You can't do tough workouts every day of the week but you can do consecutive tough days if you are mixing up the muscle groups. Running sprints, for example, is very different to a KB session.

Djchickpea · 08/05/2020 13:07

Les mills (love it - so much choice) and some running 2 or 3 times a week.
