Laptop or Chromebook

I need a laptop. For job hunting, CV WFH etc. I'm not into streaming stuff and am very untechnical.

Chromebooks seem to be much better value.

What would you recommend?

Thanks

I've got a Chromebook and love it. It starts really quickly and there is no need for antivirus software. Save everything to Google docs and I can access my files on any device. Downsides are that you cant store much on the actual device (use cloud storage or USB drives) and can't install any software that needs an executable file (.exe). I use a proper laptop to work from home as I needed to download a VPN, which I couldn't do on my Chromebook.

Im looking for a new “something” for DD for college.

Is a chromebook better? Whats the difference?

I'm confused.
My laptop is a Chromebook...?

Chromebooks are great for the things you mention, OP. They're also very simple to look after, whereas windows laptops are more complicated.

Bargain- you should check if the college has any recommendations/specs. Your DD may need access to specific software that will only run on windows, for example.

Chromebooks are incredibly simple and in my experience, very cheaply and poorly made.

I would spend the extra and get a proper laptop.

I love my Chromebook for internet browsing and the charging time and battery life is superb. It's very speedy in comparison with laptops I have used. However I do struggle with Google docs and Word docs saving and converting, and Microsoft 365 is a bit of a nightmare, so I don't really use it for opening shared docs or creating my own. But mine is a good few years old now and I am a bit of a technophobe so that probably plays a large part!

very cheaply and poorly made.

Mine isn't poorly made in the least.

It's excellent, and miles apart from the pile of crap Lenovo I bought after.

Thanks for the input.

If you were to recommend a laptop, what would it be?

You can only use google office programmes on a chrome book, which is why i don’t have one - google sheets is really clunky compared to MS excel.

If that’s not a consideration, then probably a chrome book as a similarly light laptop would cost much more.

Love my Chromebook, does everything I need it to including uni work, and working from home.

I've just bought an Acer Chromebook -£290 on eBay (new) v £350 on Amazon. Hope it's good. Will report back after I've had a fiddle with it.

Thanks for all your opinions
