Do you have an iPhone and an iPad?

Do you use the iPad much if you do?
I'm thinking about buying an iPad, we don't have one currently. I have an iPhone XR which I use for everything! I do love it but I'm just wondering if I will use the iPad much?
The DC have kindle fires that don't get much use as they rather use a beat up old iPod and iPhone 6.
What do you use your iPad for the most?

Use it to read books and watch tv/films. I'm it using a lot the moment as wfh so have ipad on with tv shows on while I'm working.

hellolittlebaby · 07/05/2020 22:17

We use our phones and laptops 24/7 but hardly ever the iPad, I must admit

Dowser · 07/05/2020 22:18

Yes love my iPad...take it everywhere with me.
I have the small one as it’s more practical
The screen is about 10 inches by 8

Dowser · 07/05/2020 22:19

Jigsaws?

Never heard of it used for jigsaws

hippoherostandinghere · 07/05/2020 22:26

Mixed reports really! I think I would get some use of it I'm just not sure whether I can justify the cost right now! I mean if someone gave me one I'd be over the moon but it's quite a lot of money. I was wondering if it would be helpful for homeschooling? Both DC are using laptops which are a bit old but doing the job ok at the moment. Tough decision!

I have an iPad which I use mostly for kindle, and for apps- I prefer a bigger screen than my iPhone screen.

BillyAndTheSillies · 07/05/2020 22:40

I have both but I don't really use my iPad much apart from a few games whenever I can wrestle it away from DS1.

Handy for holidays and flights but I find the browser clunky and prefer the usability of iPhone apps over iPad.

If your DC are early teens and computer skills are going to be important for them I’d stick with the laptops. iPads are just TOO user friendly. They take all the “process thinking” out of the user’s control.

For example DD uses the iPad for her lessons online (we’re in Italy and distance learning is well established now). Quality is great For camera, microphone and speakers, she’s never lost a connection and material can be accessed from all the sources in a small piece of equipment.

BUT we hit a brick wall when she had to insert equations into her Maths work. It’s only possible in desktop mode and that meant cancelling the iPad Classroom app and going through a much more “clunky” Chrome process.

With the threat of her Maths exam needing those equations she’s had to stick with it but it’s rather tedious. She’s not a computer lover and has no interest in coding etc.
I think she’ll just go on with the iPad next year in her new school where essay writing, not computer studies will be her main use.

Have both, smallest size iPhone so it’s convenient for small handbags, and iPad that I use constantly at home. Prefer the larger screen, even wearing glasses it’s still better than using the smaller screen. More comfortable overall and can split the screen into two web pages and compare things, lots of different webpages pages open that you can go to. Maybe you can do this on the iPhone but I don’t know how as easily myself. Everything seems easier, messages from phone, pictures, email, apps, can all be easily looked at, remain open and switched between. Just couldn’t be without my iPad now. I wouldn’t give up the iPhone though.

Holothane · 07/05/2020 23:13

I have the 12 inch one because of my eyes saved up for it and love it, I use it for everything now, my iPhone is used for texts audible and kindle. Again a larger screen 7 plus.

MerryDeath · 07/05/2020 23:15

my ipad was a gift and at the time i thought pah i don't need one of those but i LOVE it. i don't use it so much at the moment as with a baby it's easier to just have my iphone in my pocket but generally i'd be bereft without it.

Holothane · 07/05/2020 23:16

@Dowser magic jigsaws I love it, no bits to search for or under you scroll down for your bit, I do 142 pieces and love it. When eyes really bad I can do 43 pieces.

ButterfliesandMoths · 07/05/2020 23:17

I have iPhone & iPad. I love my iPad & use it all the time.

FamilyOfAliens · 07/05/2020 23:24

I’m shocked that people watch films on their phones! You must miss so much detail, watching on a tiny screen.

MillicentMartha · 07/05/2020 23:29

I have both. I use my iPad 95% of the time at home. My phone only when my iPad runs out of charge or for checking WhatsApp. My iPad doesn’t have a sim so I use it on WiFi only. When I’m out of the house I use my phone but struggle with the smaller screen.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/05/2020 23:39

I use my iPad for all browsing, MNing, reading the news etc.

The iPhone is used as a phone, for WhatsApp and with my Apple Watch for activity and health stuff. It's the smallest one, fits my bag and my hand - the larger ones are way too big to use as phones imo. But they're all too small for browsing etc. This may of course be a function of age and longsightedness!

I wfh and have a work laptop ... on a dock with two large monitors and a proper keyboard and mouse. I don't really need a PC for personal use though am using the family one for zoom Pilates nowadays.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/05/2020 23:42

prefer the usability of iPhone apps over iPad.

The apps which I've got on both, the pad versions are much better , mostly just because there's more screen available. What apps are better on a phone than an iPad?Confused

RoscoePColtrane · 07/05/2020 23:44

I have neither! Never owned an iphone. Was given a iPad but gave it away, really couldnt figure out a use for it.

RustyBear · 07/05/2020 23:44

I have both, and use the iPad much more than the phone - I prefer the larger screen size & use Safari for most internet stuff rather than apps. I always feel when using apps for internet as if I'm not getting the whole picture, it feels like peering through a letterbox.
Also I don't see the point in switching from one app to another when I'm moving between say Mumsnet, FB, Amazon & a news site - I just use the bookmarks at the top of the page.
I also like being able to have two apps open with a split screen, so I can take notes from a web page using Safari & the Notes app, or have my password manager open next to the browser.
I play games, do my banking, check emails, watch tv & YouTube, read books, do jigsaws, look at maps and my photos on the iPad - all look better on the larger screen.

My phone I use mostly for taking photos, music in the car, texting, WhatsApp, (as there isn't a really satisfactory third party app for that on the iPad) to update my calories on My Fitness Pal, as it's easier to use for barcodes than the iPad, and to sync with my Apple Watch. And as a phone, of course.
I use my watch for fitness stuff, checking emails, notifications, receiving & replying to text & WhatsApp, answering the phone & contactless payments
I like the fact that everything syncs together, my photos I take on the phone transfer automatically to the iPad, I can check the details of something I want to buy on the iPad and then open the page on the phone in the shop and lots more. Today, for example I was making a shopping list for my DD, who does our shopping with hers every week. I went round the kitchen listing stuff I needed in Notes on the phone, then opened the Note on the iPad to edit it into the right order for DD to go round Tesco which is much easier on the larger screen.

Had an ipad years ago, before I had an iPhone. Loved the iPad, had it for a few years before it started to conk out. Then got iPhones and then a MacBook on top as a family computer a few years down the line. Sold the MacBook last year and got a new iPad. Still had iPhones too. Barely used the iPad and have already sold it on. Found it easier to use the iPhones rather than try and hold or prop up the iPad. After we sold the iPad we bought a Lenovo laptop that also converts to a tablet. Very handy.

*my mantra is:

the only place for large things to look at is in the bedroom*

Well it’s different from Live, Laugh, Love anyway.

I’m currently laying in bed mning on my phone and watching something on the iPad which is generally what I use the iPad for unless I need to do internet searching for a client, I weirdly find it easier to search and clearly see various options in a bigger screen. I do MN from the iPad if I’m bored because I use the popular threads on the side. I could live without the iPad but I really wouldn’t want too!
