I'm currently an EFL teacher working from home but only temporarily. I really like working from home though. What can you do from home that is a proper career and that doesn't take years to train for? Preferably something that pays really well!

Flying pig trainer?!

FriedasCarLoad · 07/05/2020 20:22

Book keeper?

Probably similar to your current pay. Training could be done part time, and you can work from home.

Book keeper- I don't know much about it but sounds a bit too mathsy.

Recruitment- can you do that from home? How do you get into it?

Freelance translation. Helps if you speak another language... but if you do you can be in business overnight.

BurneyFanny · 07/05/2020 21:04

In fact I recognize your name from the royalties thread - seems like an obvious answer! I’ve been WFH for years, and earn a very nice living.

wineandsunshine · 07/05/2020 21:04

Childminder?

EssentialHummus · 07/05/2020 21:06

The obvious thing is teaching English online, mainly to Chinese students (that is the largest market, anyway) - there was a large thread about it at some point last year, mentioning particular companies and their pay.

I work from home doing something related to HR (I'm being vague but trying to emphasise that it's not an MLM or similar). Also not directly linked to my previous career. And I earn a decent salary doing so. When I realised that WFH was my highest/near-highest priority, I shifted everything else to make it happen. Tough but not impossible.

TheGoldenNugget · 07/05/2020 21:14

@BurneyFanny Overnight you say? GrinI do speak another language, in fact one of the Scandinavian languages. I wanted to start my business in a different niche in September, but in the meantime I'd love to do something from home now. Can you help? Blush

Addler · 07/05/2020 21:20

I'm interested to follow this as following the birth of my first child later this year I won't be able to continue with my current career. I currently earn a decent salary so it's going to be a huge drop from what we're used to.

BurneyFanny · 07/05/2020 21:25

GoldenNugget yes all you need is a computer. my advice is get on YouTube and watch some “how to get started” videos. Feel free to PM me.

I'm a ESL tutor too. Have just moved online in the past year. It's very difficult at the moment because so many people are wondering about the same question. My workload has dropped so much, I've just applied for UC. Before, I was managing fine between companies.
There are so many new ESL teachers online now, I'm hoping it will get back to normal soon. I've spent most of my career in TEFL and worked abroad for several years as well as back here. It's a bit disheartening but hey ho!

Most Chinese companies require a BA and 120 hour TEFL now at least. It's not something you can jump into overnight anymore.

totallyyesno · 08/05/2020 21:04

I am qualified for TEFL but fancy doing something different!

@BurneyFanny Yes, I used to be a freelance translator but gave it up when my son was born and I decided that I couldn't keep both jobs. I don't really have any contacts now so not sure how to get back into it. What sort of translation do you do?

Also I didn't earn that much from it. How do you get into well-paid translation?. Grin
