Have you learnt anything through homeschooling?

Just having a little stand off with ds.
Homeschooling is an absolute nightmare in this house.
But if he was less resistant and more pleasant I think I could enjoy it
Lots of maths memories coming back and liking relearning chemistry and physics. And midsummer nights dream and poetry. Think I’d forgotten everything I learned.

That some kids are more happy to get on with it than others!

OhTheseSummerNiiiiights · 07/05/2020 19:13

I learned multiplying the old fashioned way (i.e. sums and chanting the tables).

I love all the strategies they do now! I understand it so much more Blush

DrKnickerbocker9 · 07/05/2020 19:14

I’ve learnt that I most definitely do not want to be a teacher. Over my cold, dead body.

Out of all the thousands of pupils I've taught over a decade, I've produced some shockingly reluctant learners Grin

They are much nicer to their real teachers! (I help out in school and they are genuinely lovely there)

The only bits of the y2 and y4 curriculum that have made me scratch my head are the pretentious terms in grammar that aparently didn't exist when I did A-levels in English and French.

Dk20 · 07/05/2020 19:22

I've learnt why the moon is called 'the moon' when all the other planets moons have names.

homeschoolmyarse · 07/05/2020 21:28

Or maybe I should go back to school ?

OP posts:
Fenlandmountainrescue · 07/05/2020 21:41

Why is the moon called the moon?

nomorespaghetti · 07/05/2020 21:44

I’ve learned that kangaroos can’t jump backwards!

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/05/2020 21:45

That's quadratic equations are still a mystery even after 35 years.

tiredanddangerous · 07/05/2020 22:00

That despite having 10 GCSEs, 4 A levels and a degree I can’t do year 5 maths.

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 07/05/2020 22:07

That I am shit at primary school english. There's just so much terminology, I'm sure when I was at school it was just nouns, verbs and adjectives. But now there are pronouns, adverbs, subordinating conjunctions, split diagraphs, prepositions and all sorts of nonsense words for words.
But I've also learnt what an amazing, independent learner my 8yr old is turning out to be. Crazy proud of him.

DaffyDaffy · 07/05/2020 22:21

WHY IS THE MOON CALLED "THE MOON", THOUGH?

DaffyDaffy · 07/05/2020 22:22

Sorry for shouting, I need to know.

whattodo2019 · 07/05/2020 22:29

Teachers are Amazing!!!!!
I always thought they were pretty fabulous but now I think they are incredible!!!

UpToonGirl · 07/05/2020 22:31

I've discovered my teacher was correct and that I would need to know how to multiply fractions one day...to teach my own child how to multiply fractions. Also to argue with him about why he needs to learn this, possibly to teach his own DC one day!

I also discovered that lightening is hotter than the sun!

tilder · 07/05/2020 22:32

What @DrKnickerbocker9 said.

Also. What @DaffyDaffy said.

SO WHY IS THE MOON CALLED MOON?

Typing in capitals on a phone takes ages!

WinWinnieTheWay · 07/05/2020 22:34

That my youngest DD needs more one to one, but she also needs the routine and buzz of a classroom. I'm no where near adequate and I appreciate all teaching staff all the more.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/05/2020 22:34

'Moon' comes from an old word (in several languages actually) that mean month. It would have been coined a lot earlier than we would have considered other planets and their own moons (satellites).

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/05/2020 22:37

I have learned that despite sometimes having a moan about this year's class (one of the hardest ones I've taught in 20 years), that I miss the interaction and being in class with them, seeing them learn.

It's very difficult to find and assign work that they can a) access, b) understand c) is meaningful and d) can be differentiated in a way that works at home. But most of all, it's just not the same and it's not actual teaching.

homeschoolmyarse · 07/05/2020 22:39

And it’s just the Moon, cos it was the only one at the time.

Kerryismystyleicon · 07/05/2020 22:39

That I'm rather thick BlushBlush

Wasail · 07/05/2020 22:41

That my 10 year old DS is pretty much my soul mate.
I love homeschooling him, well he seems to be teaching me a lot too. He LOVES learning, he sucks in new information like a little sponge. But occasionally I have to teach a bit of resilience when it’s harder than he first thinks.
Sorry, not so much a stealth boast as a full on proud mum brag.
To be fair my oldest was a pain in the backside to do homework with and we fought all the time, so it hasn’t always been plain sailing in this house. He is 20 now and turned out okay despite my interference

Woeismethischristmas · 07/05/2020 22:43

I learnt the origins of the metric system. I never knew a gram is the equivalent mass as one cubic centimetre of water.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/05/2020 22:44

Just as the kilogram is the mass of a litre of water.

BestZebbie · 07/05/2020 22:51

I learned that otter poo apparently smells like jasmine tea.
