Restless leg syndrome sufferers - what does it feel like?

Just that, really.

I'm wondering if I'm getting symptoms of it, but it's started really suddenly and I don't know if that's normal or not?

I've had this for most of my pregnancy. Very annoying!

MadamBatty · 07/05/2020 20:41

Whatifthisisit · 07/05/2020 21:02

Magnesium makes no difference to me when I have restless legs but iron supplements really really help.

Magnesium supplements (preferable magnesium glycinate) or magnesium baths - epsom salts.

An ache that's not an ache that means I have to move my legs. It runs in my family, I remember as a child that my dad's RLS used to drive my mum mad & she would send him out for a walk. He was so glad when he found out it was a real syndrome. He used to take a low dose of a drug intended for ? Parkinson's. Mine is when I'm watching TV. I never get it in bed.

Mooey89 · 07/05/2020 21:15

I’ve had it for as long as I can remember and same for my mum and nan! I think it’s hereditary.
Mine is always when I’m tired, sort of feels like a current of electricity in the bones of my legs and feet? The only way to relieve it is to move them... except it doesn’t relieve it!

Standrewsschool · 07/05/2020 21:21

Sometimes I describe its like having an electric shock. You keg suddenly jerks forward.

Sometimes if starts whilst watching tv, I find the act of going to bed helps. It seems to break the cycle.

If it’s in bed, then not having the duvet on helps. I try to do controlled movement to counteract it, but sometimes the feeling builds up, and then suddenly it has to be released. It can affect my whole body also.

Sometimes it randomly starts. Other times,I can have some wine or chocolate fine. Then the next glass sets it off. I can almost feel it creeping through my body.

Started when pregnant 9 years ago and still have it. Magnesium helps a lot. Or putting my feet in freezing water till they go "ouch!!" Stage and you get that shudder in your lower leg. That sounds really weird and odd - but it helps! Limiting coffee to 1 per day helps me too. Or when in bed and I can't be bothered to get up: constant moving, tapping, rubbing of calves. It's torture!

BogRollBOGOF · 07/05/2020 22:16

I have to exercise regularly or I get restless and my mental and physical energy get out of sync.

I had a bit of it when pregnant (struggled with SPD so moving was painful) and the exercise bike was handy for burning the feeling off. It's a very compulsive feeling.

lennonj · 07/05/2020 22:22

I get it in my feet in the evenings. I need to constantly move them and I feel like I'd like to curl them up inside my legs! I use a magnesium oil called Karma rub which works well. Magnesium spray is supposed to be good too, better than taking supplements.

YahBasic · 07/05/2020 22:24

Just the ones from Holland and Barrett, it’s the 150mg ones. Two of them is about 90% of your daily allowance.

They have the buy one get one for a penny at the mo.

Gimmecaffeine · 07/05/2020 22:25

I think all the time we get a vague sense of discomfort before moving/readjusting/stretching, with RLS you move but the need to stretch is still there. It's like a tired, deep ache.

Ltdannygreen · 07/05/2020 22:34

For me it’s when I’m tired too, usually have to keep moving it to get some relief, it’s a really hard feeling to explain, it com3s with the territory when you have thyroid issues,

Kerryismystyleicon · 07/05/2020 22:39

Magnesium oil rubbed into my legs has been an absolute godsend. Suffered with restless legs for years, exacerbated by pregnancy.

I can honestly say that the oil has changed my life, I spray it on my calves every night and along with keeping my legs elevated, it's been amazing.

AliciaWhiskers · 07/05/2020 23:09

@Ltdannygreen i never knew that about thyroid issues. I’m hypothyroid, got diagnosed about 12 years ago and am on 100mcg Levothyroxine. Do you think my dose is wrong?

AliciaWhiskers I first experienced it towards the later stages of my first pregnancy 12years ago). I remember visiting my GP with sheer exhaustion from not sleeping, and I remember her having to look the condition up online, as she‘d never heard of it. I came out of that appt none the wiser, sadly.
Earlier, I remembered I had tried a magnesium spray on my calves before, but it didn’t help a great deal, sadly.

stellabelle · 08/05/2020 00:24

I've had it for years. I get that intense restless feeling deep in my muscles, and also get the feeling that ants are crawling around under the skin of my legs. If I take magnesium , I get good relief. I use the powder mixed in a little tonic water ( which contains quinine, also good for the condition).

copperoliver · 08/05/2020 00:27

Mine feels like my brain is constantly telling my legs to move when I am trying to sleep worse when over tired or stressed. X

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 08/05/2020 00:39

I've always had it. Feels like a sort of ache but not painful - bit like the ache that accompanies pins and needles. And then it gets so strong that my leg twitches involuntarily. The tireder I am, the stronger the twitch. Changing position and stretching helps. It doesn't bother me but it irritates my husband.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 08/05/2020 00:54

I get the electricity build up feeling mentioned above. When that happens it's usually in my arms too and I have to get up and shake it out of me. More frequently it's a deep twitchy, ache. Exercise, sleep and a g&t (just for the quinine Wink ) help me.

Justgivemewine · 08/05/2020 01:06

An almost uncontrollable urge to move my legs, if I try to stop/ignore it like if I’m trying not to disturb dh at night then my legs will end up twitching violently anyway so it’s better to move them a bit now and them just to ease it.

I’ve also found magnesium helps a lot. Mine is also worse when I have been drinking alcohol or if I’m dehydrated.

Panpastels · 08/05/2020 01:19

I use a magnesium spray before bed. Not a cure but it does help.
Symptoms for me are a crawling sensation and an urge to jerk my legs in response.

Grandadwasthatyou · 08/05/2020 01:30

I'm suffering from this as we speak! Trying to watch tv but constantly shuffling on the settee and stretching my legs out. I know I'll have to go up to bed now and take my prescribed ropinirole.

SerenDippitty · 08/05/2020 03:02

Magnesium Spray works for me.

returnofthemollymawks · 08/05/2020 03:06

What stewpots said. For me it's only when I'm stressed or worried.
