Tooth brushing, 3 year old

I have a 3 (almost 4) year old. I have a 2 minute timer for her teeth brushing, and usually let her do the first minute by herself. Then I take over and do the rest just to be sure they are properly done.

My OH always lets her do them completely herself and he is adamant it's normal for that age to do them themselves.

Could I please ask for your opinions/ experiences

Dentist here. Until they can wash their own hair they cannot do their own teeth. Will vary between children. My 10 year old dies his own teeth but I check them occasionally. My 7 year old sometimes does them
Himself, and 4 year old has them done for him.

My 3 year old does some himself then I finish the rest off, but it is a massive battle every day. If I left him to it they would not be brushed very well.

Great, thank you both!

I've tended to say at 6 they can start doing the occasional brush by themselves, about half of them at 7years old, and most of them at 8 old (and I haven't reached an age yet where I'd be happy to leave them totally to it but I imagine 10 might be ok). It takes a long time to really get control of a toothbrush and make it do what you want. Presumably your three year old doesn't have great penmanship yet? Your DH is silly to think a toothbrush would magically be easier to do a great job with!

My 3 year old needs supervised brushing. He will do it himself but needs me to go over again.
