Why do jobs like this pay so poorly?

Why do jobs like this one pay so poorly? Seems to be asking for a lot for very little pay... In London too.

I'm looking into Procurement entry roles... I'm looking to start one outside of London and it is the same salary as this London role, but asking much less.

Why do roles like this pay so little? As a comparison, I'm a PA and have earned 30k+ for doing much less than these type of jobs!

That (£24k) is more than my graduate son gets as a delivery driver full time under PAYE delivering groceries (he is on about £22k a year). I think PAs have traditionally just been fairly well paid. When I was a trainee lawayer the PAs were paid more than us even despite our 4 years of law studies - graduate and post grad exams.

I think it's more a case of PAs being paid a lot for what the job appears to entail.

Obviously some PA jobs will be very challenging, looking after a difficult boss with a busy schedule, plus perhaps some technical or similar input, but the reality is that PAs are paid well for the type of job, rather than other jobs being low paid, although that's not a lot for a bilingual role, but perhaps they're hoping to recruit a Chinese person with good English. It also doesn't appear to require a degree, although I expect that most applicants will be graduates.

But a delivery driver doesn't really require anything like being articulate etc? My nephew is a delivery driver and left school with no proper GCSEs. Not to say your son is anything like that, I'm sure he's very clever by the sounds of his qualifications, but the job doesn't really relate much to them

Forget what it's advertised at. What will someone doing that job actually be paid ?

A lot of roles are advertised like that so the recruiters can whinge about there being a "skills shortage" in case anyone is listening.

Reading between the lines it sounds like the potential employer might be a start up.

I don't think £24-26k is what I'd class "poorly paid" though.

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 06/05/2020 18:03

user it is poorly paid for a private sector position

Not all PAs are well paid. I'm not motivated by money - I do a PA role I
really enjoy. Some PA jobs are very demanding and PAs can take on all sorts of projects to support a boss. These sorts of jobs are well paid.

I would have thought that with a procurement role there would be scope for promotion.

NinetySixer · 06/05/2020 18:22

I wouldn’t say that is poorly paid. It’s a job with very little responsibility in a (from what I can gather) small company.

Procurement is very admin based and, based on what our procurement execs do, will have very little responsibility.

Once you get up to a head buyer level you can earn shit loads.

CormoranStrike · 06/05/2020 18:23

I don’t think it is poorly paid at all; I must live on another planet

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 06/05/2020 18:47

Corm Do you live in London or on the outskirts? It's a fine salary if you do. Defitnley not if you're London based. It's basically just above min wage when you take into account travel costs or living costs if you're living and working in London

Outside of London.

Anotherchangeanothername · 06/05/2020 21:51

I’m not sure why you think this is so badly paid? All our grads start on 23k. Interns are on London loving wage (10.5 ph- like 21k a year).

Yes it’s not much, but get a foot in the door, work hard and you’ll go up 10k within 18 months

Anotherchangeanothername · 06/05/2020 21:52

Oh and yes my PA earns more- but she has far more responsibility than a grad. Not comparable really

Keke94LND · 23/09/2021 12:44

How's your search going OP? I am also a PA and also having a look at procurement now!
