Covid 19 caused asthma?

Hi,

I’m convinced me and Dh has covid19 around 6 weeks ago. Dh felt better after 3 weeks and I thought I was. Last week my chest started feeling tight and I kept coughing. It’s non stopped and iv rang the doctor and they told me to rest and sounds like Iv caused damage due to coughing.

It’s not getting better and I’m 90% Iv developed asthma.

I had it as a child but out grew it.

It feels like my throat is closing up but it doesn’t hurt? It feels like I need to cough to clear soemthing but nothing comes up. I rattle when I breathe in and out which makes me need to cough more. I don’t think I have a chest infection.

It feels like it’s at the top of my lungs if that makes sense.

It’s worse in the morning and late at night or if I’m laid down/slouching.

It’s driving me mad!! And Dh 🙈. I end up having a coughing attack where I’m breathing in deeply to try and couch harder but I can’t seem too.

Is it worth ringing back tomorrow?

I'm sorry to hear you've been feeling like this.

I believe that the 'outgrowing' asthma is actually a myth. It may go dormant but can start up again at any point in your life, so it sounds very possible that the virus has woken your asthma so to speak.

This came from my DS12 respiratory consultant as he's a severe asthmatic and I was pinning my hopes on him 'outgrowing' it.

I'd definitely call again tomorrow and ask for a reliever and potentially a preventer to get you through this time. Hopefully you'll be able to wean off it all again once you're fully recovered.

Definitely call back.

And in the mean time until you have inhalers don’t mess around. Asthma is very dangerous so if at any point you’re struggling to breathe just call an ambulance. I know that sounds very dramatic but I am told this every time I see my asthma nurse and speak to my GP about my asthma.

This sounds familiar! Very similar to you but I had exercise induced asthma, only showed up in high cardio / cold weather conditions. Had all the symptoms a month back and have ended up on an inhaler. So yes, I think it seems to exacerbate low level / ‘outgrown’ asthma (from my tiny experience!)

Definitely get an inhaler.

I'm
Pleased to hear that @Mummypig2020, I was wondering how you got on.

I hope you're feeling much better soon!

Oh that’s good, look after yourself!

Hope you feel better soon. I had very mild asthma as a child and had no problems with it as an adult until it randomly flared up when I was pregnant with ds2 so I think once you’ve had it as a child it can come back. Keep inhalers to hand and hopefully it will go away again when you are fully recovered.
