Hi there - I have a large team at work who I am trying to support as we all work remotely.

I have a young lass - in her twenties - who is in her first pregnancy. Unfortunately, given the conditions we are under, she only has her husband to help and support after birth.

What practical ways can I help her?
If this describes your situation, what could your manager do for you to help?

So far I have called her every couple of weeks to check in (she is an individual contributor who reports to someone who reports to someone who reports to me so its not appropriate that I call her every week - she'd freak out). I have assured her that our jobs are not at risk (lots of layoffs where we are so this is relevant), and I have encouraged her to take as much maternity leave as she wants and needs (there's a bit of competitive get-back-to-work-ness trend currently which I think is unhealthy). I was thinking of sending her vouchers to online meal services to deliver her cooked food after the baby so she doesn't have to worry about cooking meals. Would this be a good idea? Any other ideas? Oh, I also have some books for the baby ready to send her after the birth (my children's favorite ones - Julia Donaldson mostly).

thanks for your ideas

Honestly? There will be her and her DH at home all the time with 1 very tiny human. She will be fine. She has family. If they want to send her meal vouchers then that’s up to them but plenty of people manage to look after children and cook their own food. You’re her boss. Stop overstepping the mark and let her sort her own life out.

I'm in my twenties and pregnant with my first baby and just my manager asking how I am I've really appreciated and how flexible they've been with appointments taking a while with the current situation.

Food vouchers sound like a wonderful idea to help in a practical sense and I'd be overjoyed with books.

Well I think you sound like a lovely boss :) I'm sure you have reassured her alot in this worrying time, vouchers for online meals sounds amazing! If not vouchers maybe a little pamper box for mum once baby has arrived honestly though you sound lovely as it is but I'm sure she will be chuffed to receive a surprise gift x

Can I just say what a wonderful human you are OP ? I'm five months pregnant and my employer has given me nothing but hassle since I told them (early on too) I've been furloughed for 6 weeks now and haven't had any contact despite me contacting them. And I have just me at home

Books sound like a lovely idea 🙂
