Ugh bloody porous bread bag! Screw you bananas!

So went to make a bacon sandwich yesterday only to find that my bread smelled sickly sweet! Like, boke-worthy sweet.

It's happened once before when the fairy liquid opened in my shopping bag. The bread bag must be so thin that it let's it in...

So I hunted all over the place to see if it could have been something like that and then I realised -

I'd left the bread alongside some other shopping in the front hall for a few days when I first bought it (I do this rather than disinfecting everything) and it was sat next to (not on, or touching, just next to) some bananas! The bananas have ruined the bread!

Thought I could save it for jam at least but nope, opened it today and the whole loaf has gone white (from the edges in). Bloody bananas! Lol

So there a heads up guys! Be careful what you leave near your bread loads!

Bananas are not allowed to set foot ( peel ? ) in my house , I hate the smell of them.

Do you leave all of your meat & dairy etc in the hall for days to go off?! You're more likely to get food poisoning than Covid, surely?!

Wanderlust21 · 04/05/2020 18:05

Of course not lol. The fridge stuff gets a wipe and put in the fridge. The cupboard stuff gets left for a few days.

Yeh I was never a banana fan before hand (thought I'd try baking with them though... ...turns out - they're still gross even in cake haha) But now...major boke xD

I have a worse experience to relate with a porous bread bag. One day when ds2 was a toddler dh had just got back from doing the shopping and I was starting to put it away when ds pulled his nappy down and weed over the bags of shopping.
I remember us going through the bags to see what we could salvage. But the bread was soggy so it had to go.

Wanderlust21 · 04/05/2020 18:58

Haha peebread probay beats banana bread for grossness!

I was just thinking, I wonder if anyone has tried to use it to clean up after their dog... ...eeee

I just don't understand leaving shopping to quarantine.

If you leave fruit in bags in hallways it's going to go whiffy.

I'm high risk and I'm practising strict hand washing when dh brings the shopping home, we put it in the cupboards when he arrives home, thoroughly wash hands and get on with the day/evening.

And my anxiety levels (diagnosed) are really bad at the moment but I recognise washing shopping is just going to trigger the ocd again (also diagnosed) so I restrain myself.

Maybe try not leaving nanas to rot in future other fruits available

Why on earth would you leave bread for a few days? You would never have fresh bread. Why on earth are you doing this? Not even my 85 year old grandparent is doing that, are you extremely vulnerable?

Wanderlust21 · 04/05/2020 19:03

I usually tip them out onto the table in the hall/bed in the spare room.

Its no different leaving bananas in the hall than leaving them in the kitchen fruit bowl.

Honestly I usually have a bit of a kitchen floor pantry anyway. So now it's just a hall one instead.

Most of the stuff wont be needed for a few days anyway. The bread of course gets used a bit sooner cause it only lasts a few days.

Theres only me so a small loaf takes 4 or 5 days to get through anyway, so it's never gonna be fresh lol.

And considering there are ppl literally sponge washing all their shopping right now, I hardly think leaving it out of the cupboards for a few days is a big deal.

Are people really washing shopping or leaving it untouched for days? Is this part of the official advice?

I’m buying shopping and putting it away, ready to use (not least of all for banana type catastrophes).

We are shielding in this house too, but definitely not going that far.

Thighmageddon · 04/05/2020 19:43

It is though, we hand bananas so they have airflow.

Thighmageddon · 04/05/2020 19:43

Hang not hand ffs , I'm not in the habit of handing out bananas.

ChangeThePassword · 04/05/2020 19:45

Surely all the more reason to not leave it for a few days before starting to eat it!

ChangeThePassword · 04/05/2020 19:47

And fwiw the only banana bread recipe I like is nigellas. Worth trying. It has alcohol in it...

(supposed to be rum or bourbon, but I've tried normal whisky and that works well too)

Wanderlust21 · 04/05/2020 19:52

Haha I suppose booze makes everything better xD

Op I think I love you a wee bit. Anyone who openly says they usually have a kitchen floor pantry is good people Grin

Wanderlust21 · 04/05/2020 20:04

Life is too short to hang bananas xD
Though to be fair, it's probably a smart move.

Theres a tin of tomato soup on my kitchen floor that's been there for months lol. Should probably start using it as a doorstop. Heaven forbid I do something drastic like actually bend down to put it away lol.

My loaf of sourdough lasts me a week, but I always start eating it the day I buy it, that's when it's at it's best.
