Hey!

Close friends due first baby soon.

Trying to think of what to get them , budget £50-70.

What was the best gift you got? (Perhaps something unexpected?)

We don't need be able to get online as can wait until after lockdown for the perfect thing.

We've got a few ideas, but looking to see if there is something we might have missed

Things we are thinking of

  • sleeping bags *weaning essentials/books
  • larger size clothes (with our DD we found we had loads of beautiful 0-3 stuff which we were very grateful for but not much bigger.

Thanks!

When DD was born I really appreciated practical gifts. I'm not a fan of "useless tat", so I think your suggestions are excellent. You need to check that your friend doesn't already have what you want to buy though.

Something nice for mum would be appreciated as well.

My best gift was a massive box of nappies and a bottle of champagne

We got some Mori bits which included a personalised hooded towel and a sleeping bag that went from newborn to age two that we still use. Their packaging is gorgeous and everything is good quality.

Some sort of food delivery for that sort of budget with a bottle of champagne and Camembert, crusty bread, chocolate and then some easy meals. That would be the best gift EVER. I would never forget if someone had done that for me. In fact the best gifts we were sent were a box of brownies and champagne!!

HermioneWeasley · 03/05/2020 12:34

Check out the Yummy Yank for delivery of the most amazing brownies.

Honestly, they’ll be inundated with baby related gifts - our kids often only wore an outfit once as we had so many and they grew so fast.

For me i preferred practical gifts that I may not have thought of myself.
Best was a probably a decent ear thermometer (Braun) as it gets used all the time and had a traffic light system so I knew when to worry.

I also appreciated:
Decent thick muslins
Reusable nappies (if they are going that route)
A decent nipple balm if breastfeeding (I likes Moo Goo's Mudder Udder balm)
Sleeping bags with legs (walk in suits) as DS hated actual sleeping bags - but I also liked Swaddle Up sleeping bags in the early days.

Thanks for the suggestions all.

Hadn't thought about a hamper food type thing so I will add it the list of possibilities.

We got a lovely baby memory book. You fill in all the info about your baby, milestones and things like that and add pictures. We loved it and would never have thought of it ourselves.
(The couple who got that for us are die their first in a couple of months, we have no idea what to get them actually).

NerrSnerr · 03/05/2020 20:00

If you're spending that much I'd get a voucher. Some people are really particular about baby stuff and it'd be an expensive waste if not to their taste.

Ginfordinner · 03/05/2020 20:00

The baby memory book is a good idea. I filled it up over the years with photos and certificates and gave it to DD on her 18th birthday.

SherlocksDeerstalker · 03/05/2020 20:08

What about a trolley cover? Comes under the ‘practical and not useless wank’ header, and will last years. I used ours from 6 months to 4!

Or a feeding pillow? To keep both baby and Mum comfortable whilst feeding? I can send you a link to somebody who does lovely handmade ones.

Or a personalised nursery print?

millymae · 03/05/2020 20:08

Like All The Cakes I would recommend Mori items too - the hooded towels are excellent as are the sleeping bags. Expensive but worth it in my opinion. We bought my sister a few items when her little one was born and she reckoned he always slept better when he was wearing one of their sleep suits.

Grumpbum123 · 03/05/2020 20:11

Cook vouchers

nostaples · 03/05/2020 20:11

I always buy board books to begin the baby's library especially classics like The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Each, Peach, Pear, Plum etc
