Does anyone else 'see' loud noises?

I really only notice it at night, but if there happens to be a loud noise (something falling in another room, a car door being slammed loudly, etc.) I see a bright flash of light, almost at the same time as the sound.

I thought this was completely normal (IDK, a burst of adrenaline or something) but DH had never experienced it. Mind you, he also doesn't fully 'picture' things in his head, whereas I do.

When I'm drifting off and I hear a bang I see big flashes of light.

I've seen quite a few people on here mention similar, can't remember what the proper word is for it.

NotMyUsualNameNoSiree · 02/05/2020 23:43

Thank you, it's not a thread I've seen here before.

I remember the ones about sleep paralysis and those tiredness hallucinations (I forget the name of those).

So it sounds like it's more due to tiredness/sleep than the dark (I'd presumed I just didn't notice the flashes during daylight hours).

Every time it surprises me, especially as the flash seems such a quick response to the bang. Like a milisecond delay between my brain processing the bang and producing the flash.

Is it synethsia?

TwatCat · 03/05/2020 00:17

I get this too. I thought this was normal???

Also in the dark when I look side to side I get flashes the too.

TwatCat · 03/05/2020 00:19

I also get sleep paralysis.
But yes, the tiniest delay then the flash.

iklboo · 03/05/2020 00:20

Yes. If I'm in bed and there's a loud noise that see a flash of light.

Witchend · 03/05/2020 00:21

I do too.

Faircastle · 03/05/2020 00:23

Yes, I get this. If I am nearly asleep and there is a sudden brief loud noise, I see it as a flash of yellow light on the inside of my eyelids.

lyingwanker · 03/05/2020 00:24

I do, especially high pitched screams. It's like a flash of white in my eyes and my ear drum makes a little popping noise too

Faircastle · 03/05/2020 00:29

I don't think it's the same as a hypogogic hallucination because it's triggered by real sensory input. It's more like a very specific example of auditory-to-visual synaesthesia which only happens on the cusp of sleep.

TwatCat · 03/05/2020 00:29

@lyingwanker my ears do that too.

I've just had a mind bowing conversation with DH about this. And the fact that he can't "see" things when he closes his eyes, like visualising an apple. He sees nothing where I see the Apple perfectly.

WellDoneBridge · 03/05/2020 00:36

Yes! Not all the time but sometimes a large bang = a flash of light for me!

Ilovecats14 · 03/05/2020 01:19

Gutted I've never had this! Sounds so interesting!

ColdCottage · 03/05/2020 04:20

No but I feel loud noise at night and it hurts my chest.

Myownwendyhouse · 03/05/2020 06:36

No. But I have had sleep paralysis three times over the course of five years. The most terrifying thing I have ever had. There is always a figure to the side of the room and then on the bed on top of me but I can’t move.
Even thinking about it now makes me sweat and my heart races. Not being able to move or get my head of the pillow is terrifying.

Gatekeeper · 03/05/2020 06:40

I get the flashes of light too , used to get them during the day at unexpected noise but now mostly only at night

Gingernaut · 03/05/2020 07:19

@TwatCat, look up aphantasia

Tumbleweed101 · 03/05/2020 09:50

Yes, I get this sometimes.

For the post above - I don’t see pictures but think in words, like inner talking. I can visualise memories though.

jalopy · 03/05/2020 10:05

Yep, I get the occasional deafening loud bang in my head. Only at night though.

Ouchjuststoodonlego · 03/05/2020 10:27

I see flashes when there's a sound too. I also attribute colours to some words/ things e.g. triangle is green, May is pink.
I think that I have a mild form for synaesthesia.

Shelanagig · 03/05/2020 11:35

Not exactly, but I have had experience of synaesthesia. When studying music and listening intently, I would see decorations like swirling spirals on ornamentations. Other times I'd see the pattern of each instrument weaving in with the other instruments, although I could really only follow one instrument at a time. Looking like lit up coloured fluorescent tubes flowing up and down following pitch and rhythm. At that period of my life I'd also see the sound of my alarm clock. Like flashing black dots.

I've since had odd flashes of visual input for sounds, but nothing as frequent or intense as then. No drink or drugs involved at all.

My son always associated colours and taste with some words. He was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome (on the autistic spectrum) and I suspect I'm on the spectrum too. Don't know if that's a possible link.

I also get visions during an intense orgasm. Anyone else?

GinandGingerBeer · 03/05/2020 14:58

When I drift of I hear loud clanking, not all the time but especially if I'm exhausted. Odd.
I also see a flash with a bang Grin

GinandGingerBeer · 03/05/2020 14:59

The clanking is coming from me though, in my head/brain God I sound really odd now

SconNotScone · 03/05/2020 16:51

Yes, I also get the flash of light when I hear a loud noise. Not every time, and usually it happens at night time, it really freaks me out sometimes!
I am really bad at visualising things though - my husband says I have no minds eye, which sounds true enough. I can’t shut my eyes and bring up a clear picture of my daughter, husband, anything! If I read a book, I can’t even begin to visualise what the house being described (for example) looks like, even though I try really hard.
