Is there a great vacuum cleaner for under £100?

We have mostly hard floors and I just want a reasonably-priced vacuum cleaner that does a great job. I've spent hundreds on Dysons and Mieles in the past and been really disappointed with them. Is there such a thing . . . ?

Oh - we have two massive hairy cats, if that makes a difference!

We’ve had several Dysons, I won’t bother with one of those again. We’ve just bought a shark for £250 (one of those that stops the hair getting wrapped around the rollers and you can lift it off the heavy bit so it’s easier to do the stairs). Quite frankly, not a patch on Henry and that’ll be the next vacuum when this one needs replacing.

HETTIE
It's a smaller Henry
Works a treat
You won't regret it

I love my shark. I know I shouldn't find happiness in a vacuum....previously had dysons. I'm a shark convert now.

I had a miele. It died. I got a Henry. I hate Henry.

Following because our Miele is dead and the cordless shark is a pile of wank

We have two Karchers, one upstairs, one down. Price varies now between around £57 to £80.

DH says they are excellent, I would not know. Grin

We also have a Dyson V6 stick cleaner, which is good for quick clean ups. I can vouch for this one,

However DS2 has one of Lidl’s own versions, £49.99 which seems just as good.

RedPandaFluff · 03/05/2020 20:50

Why are Henrys so good though?

And isn't it annoying trailing the thing around behind you? I've always had uprights . . .

I don't know about Henry, but I've had a Hettie (smaller version of Henry) for several years and it has not lost suction. It sucks really, really well. It has a long cord and I can clean several rooms without having to plug/unplug. It has a huge bag which doesn't have to be changed for yonks. Did I mention that it sucks? Grin

I’m also looking for a good hoover, so very happy to see this post, can i ask, the ones you are recommending, are they good for picking up on deep pile rugs? my current hoover, although great on wooden floors just skims the top of rug and won’t pick bits up, So I want one that will suck up good on deep pile, thank you

For hard floors I have a cylinder vax power which was about £70. I’ve had it about three years and still going strong. The main thing is cleaning the filter regularly

rosie1959 · 04/05/2020 06:38

For carpets I have a Meile cost me around £300 years ago but still working effectively
For hard floors much cheaper option I use a long handle brush sweep into one place then dust pan & brush to pick up.
I find a Hoover on hard floors never seems to pick up the edges as well as a brush.

if you are on a tight budget, it's sometimes worth looking at reconditioned ones on ebay. there are quite a few people making a business out of reconditioning good brand vacuums, and usually give a years or 2 guarantee.

I bought a reconditioned Henry years ago and it was brilliant and lasted a few years.

Davros · 04/05/2020 10:22

Henry is great, really robust, but heavy. I use him on the patio as well as inside! He's what builders use to suck up light rubble etc. But I just bought the GTech linked to above as I'm doing more cleaning myself

Within your mentioned budget, you may find some deik vacuum cleaners. Deik vacuum cleaners are good at counting the price paid.

But you told that you have two massively shedding cats. This is really important. Pet hairs get stuck at brushroll. It causes less suction and the brushroll cannot rotate properly.

Bissel, shark manufacture vacuum cleaners that reduce hair wrap. I've used both, shark did a better performance. Shark one is called Zero-M. You should check one in my opinion. They are over your mentioned budget though.

Now about your Miele, what happened actually? I'm asking because I'm kind of a fanboy of them. I heard some complaints about them but never heard that they break early. They are good at handling pet hair too, but hair wrap occurs. Anyway, I do not have pets, my Miele serves me fine.

Another good thing is, Miele have different cleaning heads to soothe different type of needs. You may know about them from this Miele C1 vs C2 vs C3 article.
